A Battle of the Weather Apps (YEG)

If you weren’t already aware you likely now are…we take awarding the –30 degree #weatherproof badge very seriously. There are strict criteria that we follow to determine if the workout conditions are badge worthy. Those criteria include:

  • the temperature must be -30 or lower (this can include wind chill)
  • the weather apps are checked by leaders at the beginning, sometimes middle, and at the end of the workout
  • multiple weather apps are used for reference and there should be agreement amongst at least 2 of the apps

This morning we followed the criteria and the result was a judgment of not badge-worthy. While my weather app suggested a possible start temperature of -27 with windchill making it feel like-31, it also said that we were experiencing heavy snow, which was certainly not the case. Andrew’s weather app was more accurate, according to him it measures temperature specifically according to postal code, with a temperature measurement of -27, feels like -27. And that folks isn’t even close. I think that falls into the shitty zone category of, “I swear, my weather app says -30”, lies everyone unconvincingly” category. See Andrew’s past blog for a reminder of the shitty zones.

Regardless of badges or not, I am so proud of all of you who braved and embraced the elements and ran stairs. Those frosty, fleece covered faces bring me joy! Way to get your sweat on!

We can try again for Friday where my inaccurate weather app is predicting a balmy -25 feels like -35. Dream of windchill!
