A Reminder (YEG)

Sometimes these blogs can be about simple funny things but it’s also an opportunity to discuss ‘heavier topics.’ I am going to take the opportunity to do that today. Before that, here are the important bits

Wisconsin Notes:

-You showed up today, gave your heart to the community in big, small, visible, and subtle ways. You are amazing because of it.

-Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly – Find balance

-Monday at old timer’s cabin

I want to talk about something that I personally have struggled with. I am going to do my best not to sound like a self help book or the equivalent of a Live Love Laugh decal on a wall. This is about taking, and being ok with, the half-assed approach.

A lot of times as your grow up you are asked for perfection. Get the highest grades, balance the extra-curriculars, find the perfect relationships, be happy, do it all. We never stop growing up and similarly these feelings of expectations are there too – never really leaving just changing. Don’t get me wrong there are benefits to the pressure (I can work better under it), there are times where the tasks in front of you can feel like a breeze, but the smallest of things can sometimes feel monolithic. Maybe you are in that breezy spot right now and that’s great, but it never hurts to be reminded of the fact that we aren’t all in the same space. We live unique lives and we can only really pretend to be in someone else’s shoes. For the purposes of this conversation we acknowledge that this message is a reminder and while not applicable for all, it might help someone.

“Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly”……Because doing it poorly is better than not doing it.

Take the 50%, 40%, 20% task in front of you. E.g. scrubbing your face is better than not taking a shower at all. Picking up your clothes is better than never cleaning. Brushing your teeth for 30 seconds is better than not brushing them at all (when the 2mins seems exhausting). Doing 10 mins of yoga is better than not moving all day. Standing on a porch for a few mins is worth it after being in the house for three straight days because you don’t have the energy to go anywhere.

At some point in your life a task is going to feel too big to complete or you feel too lazy to try. You often hear of breaking down tasks into smaller pieces but this is your reminder that it’s ok to only finish completing a few of those small pieces and not necessarily the whole thing.

These examples aren’t all mine but I know that feeling and I am sure I am not the only one. Do things halfway – when you do you are 100% better off than you were before.

As you continue along your life, as the training season comes around the corner, as the New Year’s tasks start to pile up – All that matters is that you take that first step.
