The Need for Speed

Last night, the citizens of the United States of America of the world turned on their TVs, piled their plates with wings, and sat down with beers for a one-day show down (and despite the fact that all of Milwaukee, except for transplants, was a bit bitter about Aaron’s collarbone, we all watched the game).

Last night, the country came together to cheer for people they didn’t know, from a city they haven’t been to, simply because they love the game, they love the wings, and they love the excitement of competition… intense, sweaty, nail-biting competition.

And like that game, every Wednesday and Friday (and in some places, Monday), our cities gather for intense, sweaty, nail-biting competition. We run, we jump, we throw down, and we race. We cheer for one another and celebrate each city, even if we don’t know each other’s stories, we haven’t been to each other’s hometowns, or we don’t know why we all show up. But simply because we all #justshowup, we celebrate one another.

Super Bowl Sunday fuels the yearly excitement that we live for. November Project Wednesday and Friday fuels the weekly excitement that we desire in our a-little-too-normal, a-little-too-scheduled work and school lives. We don’t often get chances to revert to our animalistic, primal need to sprint until our lungs explode. We need that.

We need to push each other to the level of competitiveness that the Eagles and the Patriots exemplified yesterday.

We need to support one another and cheer for one another at the level of face-painted, jersey-donned Americans who are all exhausted and a little hungover today.

We need to celebrate competition on a bi-weekly basis. So keep showing up, keep racing your heart out, and keep lifting each other up.

And rest your hangover. Wednesday comes quickly.
