Words of encouragement
- “Dig deep!”
- “Power up!”
- “Almost there!”
- “Push!”
- “Great job guys!”
- “Keep moving!”
- “You got up for a reason!”
- “Let’s do this!”
- “Don’t let me catch you!”
- “You’ve got this!”
- “You can do anything for 2 minutes!”
For 30 minutes I share these little ditties during our workouts – as we pass one another on the hill, as I come up on your heels, and as we near the 30-minute buzzer. I try to use names when I catch faces and my mind processes those faces in time to call your name out as you pass by. I know I sometimes get them wrong but we’re all works in progress, right? 😉
I imagine that at 6 AM it could prove to be a little annoying to hear me calling out encouragement non-stop for 30 minutes. I wonder if that’s maybe why some of you wear headphones during our stair and hill days.
I have a secret to share. There is an ulterior motive to my words of inspiration and motivation. Many times it is selfish in nature, helping propel me up the hill. I just choose to say it out loud for everyone else’s benefit! Plus, if I keep talking aloud I can drown out the negative thoughts that seemingly want to invade my mind as my legs burn, as time seems to drag on, and as my breath takes longer to recover.
We all need to encourage ourselves to dig a little deeper some days, to make it worth that early morning alarm clock. Let’s help one another out. If you’re saying things like, “man this is tough” or “oh, this sucks” in your head, someone beside you is probably also saying it. Let’s help one another rid ourselves of the negative talk and encourage the motivating – even if it is a little annoying 😉
