Dancing in the Dark (LAX)

It’s clear to me that the seasons are changing for two reasons: A. You all were dressed like eskimos today. B. It’s DARK. It’s so dark that high fives are nearly impossible, cheering anybody on by name is out of the question and many a twisted ankle was narrowly averted today.

But fall brings new opportunities and new ways of pushing ourselves that higher temps and visibility allow us to take for granted. It’s inspiring to me to be running on a morning like today, barely recognizing the dark figure passing by, to hear her say, through exhausted breath, “Good job!” and mean it. It’s fun to me to hear the hoots and hollers of my tribe echoing through the dark, it helps me know they’re there for me.

The homework this month is to be creating new bonds with people you didn’t know before. If you’re taking this seriously, it’s a great way to come to know more about what NP is really for. We enter races and go for hikes, we push our bodies and set goals and all of that is great but NP was founded on an idea of community.

Darkness is inevitable and it can creep in in subtile and unexpected ways, but if we have each other, we can be stronger. Remember that on Friday and next Wednesday and through the whole winter as things get chilly and dark and hard. We’re here for each other and we’ve all got a voice that can reach through the dark to connect with what matters: each other.
