Wearing Masks During Outdoor Workouts – Update

Updated on August 16 to include the latest CDC guidelines.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) shared updated guidelines for vaccinated people in the United States so we wanted to share our position on the matter. As of the end of July, CDC guidelines are: 

  • Advising fully vaccinated people to wear a mask in public indoor settings in areas of substantial or high transmission.
  • Advising that fully vaccinated people might choose to wear a mask regardless of the level of transmission, particularly if they are immunocompromised or at increased risk for severe disease from COVID-19, or if they have someone in their household who is immunocompromised, at increased risk of severe disease or not fully vaccinated.
  • Recommending that fully vaccinated people who have come into close contact with someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 to be tested 3-5 days after exposure, and to wear a mask in public indoor settings for 14 days or until they receive a negative test result.
  • A few other things listed here

These regulations are driven by the dominance of the Delta variant in the United States, a growing number of breakthrough cases of fully vaccinated people testing positive, and the fact that fully vaccinated people can spread the Delta variant to others. We hope that more of us will continue to take advantage of the vaccines so we can all resume social activities at the pre-pandemic levels. At the same time, we understand that some folks may be hesitant to get vaccinated due to generational mistrust of the health care system that has been intentionally harming communities of color, campaigns that are politicizing the issue, or some other personal reason. At November Project we support everyone’s right to choose to get a COVID-19 vaccine and we approach all our workouts with the assumption that we will have a mix of vaccinated and unvaccinated members and no one will be asked to prove which group they are a part of.

From the beginning of this pandemic, we’ve been erring on the side of caution with the goal to provide a workout experience where everyone feels comfortable and safe. With all those factors taken into account, we encourage that November Project members, vaccinated or not, continue to wear masks before and after the workout or any other situation where social distancing may not be possible (hanging out before the workout starts, during the announcements, group photos, etc.) Per CDC guidelines, the masks will not be required during the workout activity (running, walking, rolling, etc) regardless of vaccination status. An exception to this rule is any setting where the Co-leaders’ assessment of the workout conditions may require wearing masks as well as instances where masks are mandated by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations. We also understand that no two cities are alike so we are continuing to work with our Co-leaders on evaluating their city-specific circumstances to come up with the best solutions for their community. 

As more information comes to light and the regulations continue to evolve so will our directives. In a meantime, we appreciate your understanding and continued support.

  1. I STRONGLY encouraged EVERYONE ( check with your Primary Care Provider if you have personal health concerns) To GET VACCINATED! I’ve have been on the front lines as an RN since the beginning.
