Too cold? NEVER [MTL]

Now that the weather in Montréal has officially dropped close to the freezing point, it is time to start thinking on how to be “weatherproof”. Actually, almost everyone can work out safely in cold weather. We know this at November Project. No temperature is too low to exercise outdoors as long as you suit up to minimize cold weather risks. Some of us proposed a few recommendations after the workout today that I would like to share with you all. SO, here is YOUR ACTION PLAN for being weatherproof – Canadian style:

1. Wear synthetic fabrics, fleece, wool, and saran wrap
Your base or first layer should always be synthetic or something that will wick moisture away from your skin. Insulation should be in the second layer. Fleece or Wool are good choices here since they will help insulate the body. The third layer should be a breathable, waterproof layer to help repel wind and rain. This is where a simple plastic garbage bag could also be used to cover your body and add another layer of water/wind repellent. Remember to avoid wearing cotton since it loses its insulating power when one becomes sweaty.

2. Cover your fingers, toes and head.
Limbs are more susceptible to the cold than the core. In addition to wearing weatherproof gloves (a MUST for winter weather – if you don’t have any, buy some), wear latex gloves under your gloves. That way, when we will be doing burpees or push-ups come winter, your hands will remain dry! For your feet, consider roomier shoes or boots to accommodate thick thermal or wool socks. Another trick would be to put plastic bags on each foot and then your socks for the same reasons. One tribe member recommended saran wrapping your feet – over your socks – when it is really cold in order to insulate your toes. We mustn’t forget that a large percentage of our body heat is also lost through the head, so wearing a hat, headscarf and buff is a must. If you do not have, it is time to start shopping!!!

3. DON’T overdress.
IT IS OK to feel cold at first but once you’ll get moving, your body will start warming up. Overdressing will lead to excess sweating, which will cause the body to become wet. Wet skin leads to heat loss and will lower the body temperature. So, start experimenting with layers now that we are around the 0 C mark. A good rule of thumb is to dress for a +/- 10C the current temperature. Example: this morning’s workout was at 1C, so dress for 10C weather and you should be fine. Just remember to bring a change of clothes or another layer once the workout is over!

4. Enjoy the cold weather
Cold weather allows you to be outside in moments that others won’t be. This allows you to enjoy moments others do not have the chance to see – like this morning’s incredible sunrise. Let’s face it: if you stay in bed and press the snooze button, all you’ll see is the inside of your eyelids. Thus, GET OUTSIDE and enjoy the cold. Once the workout over, there is always HOT YOGA to warm you up if need be 🙂

Have a safe winter all!!! Looking forward to sweating with you all.
