Wisconsin Notes:

  • New Co-Leader- Megan!!!
  • Puke-cries at Sunrise
  • Marina wins Shabooya (after being called out in the We Missed You post last year)

Today, we introduced our newest addition to the NP Winnipeg leadership crew. What does this mean? Why four leaders? Well, Tom starts his residency this summer, and he knows that when that time comes, it is unlikely he’ll be able to give the tribe the attention it needs and deserves. We decided to have a transition plan, instead of an abrupt leader change like the other tribes, because we are Winnipeg and we do shit the cool way. We also wanted to make sure Megan would be introduced before Summit, so that she could make the trip with us and meet all of the other leaders. Summit is where a lot of cool #leaderstuff happens; you leave feeling inspired and motivated, with new ideas for how to improve your own tribe’s experience.

It was a tough choice for us, choosing the next leader. We felt we had a few quality options, and we contemplated it for quite some time. Here are some fun facts about Megan:

  • has been coming to NP since January last year
  • signed up for Summit 4.0 on a whim, after being prompted by Brogan Graham’s visit
  • has helped run the dragon boat pop up workouts
  • her and Jamie were the babysitters club for all of us last summer when the three of us were all away, and put on a kick ass workout, mosquitoes and all
  • is a provincial paddling coach
  • runs marathons

She has written a few words for today, so I’ll let her take it from here.

OK! Wow! This morning was wild! I am beyond excited to be Winnipeg’s first female leader! I was a little nervous to see how y’all would react to the news of a new leader, but OF COURSE the tribe was incredible and welcomed me with open arms (literally), already so many of you have reached out, and I am feeling the love!

Big ups, that was a tough one this morning tribe, way to bring the fire and absolutely crush it – I know my lungs are still burning from sucking all that cold air on those burnouts at the end.

Who am I? What has November Project meant to me!? And how the heck did I end up here?!

I lived abroad for nearly four years and I moved back home to Winnipeg about a year and a half ago.  I returned to Winnipeg to be close to my family and friends and as happy as this made me, something was missing.  I felt a hesitance to try and connect with strangers, to make new friends and to push outside of my normal routine; all of the things I had been forced to do when I lived in strange cities.

Then I found November Project and all of that changed.  Yvette Page had been trying to recruit me since the summer but I kept putting it off, saying I’d try it ‘when I was in better shape’- whatever that means #just show up, amiright?!   Finally one freezing Friday in January, I showed up to a pop up at the Ledge and I’ve never looked back.  I found my people; this welcoming, fast, fun, diverse, inclusive, group of weirdos who just wanted to hug some strangers, make connections and get in a kick ass workout before breakfast.  Over the past year and a bit, I’ve made so many incredible friends who inspire me and push me to do better and be better.  This tribe has made me faster and fitter and reminded me that it means nothing unless you’re having fun doing it.

When I attended Summit 4.0 last summer, it all clicked for me.  The hype and the energy was next level and I finally understood that this movement was so much larger than any one city or tribe.  Every tribe has a different vibe but we are all united by our desire to connect, to be part of something bigger.

I was surprised and honoured and scared and overjoyed and giddy when the boys asked me to join them as a co-leader, but of course my answer was a hard YES.  What do I bring? A loud voice, a big heart, some strong lungs, open arms (and of course XX chromosomes).  I’m amped up to bring some girl power to the leadership team and to rep all of you fast females.  Rick, Tom and Derek do an incredible job leading our tribe and we’re going to keep bringing that same fire.  We’re cooking up some exciting new pop-ups to bring you this spring and summer, it’s gonna be good!

Timing being what it is, I’m headed down south to Texas on Saturday to coach for two week at Team Toba Canoe/ Kayak’s spring training camp, but after that I’m back to stay!

Happy Wednesday Friends! I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to go!

Love you all!
Megan

Let’s not forget the Shabooya Award. First of all, round of applause for Kelly and Marina both making it this morning. Kelly’s been clinging to that helmet for three weeks, she didn’t want to let it go. She passed it on to her partner in crime, Marina. Fun fact about Marina, she cracked her skull at a pop-up workout, refused to be taken to the hospital by Milana, and tried telling Robyn she’d be in for work that evening. I think she only missed two or three workouts and then she was back.
