Good morning fellow YOWzers. Thank you for sharing your morning with us on this beautiful spri- oh wait, it’s snowing.
Take two. Good morning YOWzers! Thank you for sharing your morning with us on this beautiful fourth winter day. For our international readers who may be unfamiliar with this season, fourth winter comes about once you’ve finally put your winter coat away, swapped out winter boots for sandals, and gotten your winter tires off your car. It typically lasts until you have caved and dug out your winter clothes again, at which point the temperature will promptly rise by approximately 20 degrees.
In honour of the 51st Earth Day, this morning we worked through a number of movements for 51 seconds. We burpeed (that’s a verb, right?), squatted, lunged, planked, and swam together, and we shared ways in which we are trying to be environmentally conscious. We then silently cursed Jack Johnson for having such repetitive lyrics (for those who missed it, if you have three minutes to spare in your day, we invite you to listen to “The 3 R’s” by Jack Johnson while holding a plank. When he says “Three”, “Reduce”, “Reuse” or “Recycle” do a push-up, and when he says “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” all in a row, do a push-up and shoulder taps. Enjoy!).
ANYWAY. While Earth Day is hugely important, it’s abundantly clear that one day of education, reflection, and effort is not enough to make a significant difference. Effecting real and lasting change will not be the result of a few people doing things perfectly for one day. It relies on all of us doing things imperfectly every day. Check out the resources below to learn about ways in which you can help make Ottawa a greener place.
A few resources to help you be imperfect today. And also tomorrow and the next day.
→ Get out there and Clean the Capital. And/or enjoy some plogging on your own time!
→ Not sure if that carton goes in the blue, black, or green bin? Waste Explorer can tell you.
→ Have something that isn’t accepted in any of those bins? Check out Earth Hub to see if they can help with that and find a drop off location near you.
→ Check out Ecology Ottawa for more information about local environmental issues and how you can be a part of the solution.
→ … surely there are many more. Please share any additional resources, tips, or ideas that you have in the comments below! No positive action is too small to share.
We hope you have a great day and we are so glad that you’re here. No better way to start the day than with a group of wonderfully imperfect people.
Sole-fully,
Rebecca & Becca
ANNOUNCEMENTS
1. Go get your winter jacket. No wait, you don’t need it. Actually yeah, you should wear it. Wait 10 minutes and re-assess.
2. Tag us @novprojectottawa and share your “green” action for the day. Challenge a fellow NPer to do the same and pay it forward.
3. Pet a dog. If that dog is your dog, pick up their poop. If that poop is in a compostable bag, put it in your green bin.
