The Difference Between Showing Up and SHOWING UP

Hi, team #bustedhipsandknees aka Stefanie and Emily here. Today we’re going to talk about something we’ve noticed at the workouts lately.

We all show up on Mondays and Wednesdays for different reasons – the community, the disgustingly yet awesome sweaty hugs, the ass-kicking workout, the excuse to explore our beautiful city, socializing over post-workout avocado toast and vanilla lattes. Today, we want to talk about the ass-kicking workout aspect.

A few Mondays ago, at the top of Mt. Soledad (elev 823’ for whomever I overheard asking about that), the wise, former leader Lauren Padula reminded us that we get what we put in at NP. When we show up for the workouts, we can choose to take it easy, we can choose to get a decent workout in, or we can choose to kick our own asses.

It’s really a choose-your-own-adventure type deal, but lately, there’s been more and more people choosing to not even do the workouts. Some people show up, do the bounce, listen to the explanation of the workout, and then…do something entirely different. Sure, there are days when we’re tired, not feeling 100% healthy, tapering for or  recovering from a race, in a bad mood, you name it. Who cares if you walk or #sexypace some or all of the workout? Do push-ups on your knees? Have to replace hoistees with squats or not putting ass to grass (sshhhh, we won’t tell). Take it easy, do yo thang – we’re just happy you showed up at 6:29.

Both of us have had long stints on Injury Deck and understand it’s a great way to still participate in NP when you’re, well, injured. Emily sustained multiple hip fractures in the past two years and couldn’t walk or stand on her own for months and Stefanie busted her knee at a workout (heyooo running man hill at Kate Sessions) and couldn’t run without intense pain for weeks. So, we feel you. It made running around with everyone else extremely difficult, if not impossible. Trust me, WE FEEL YOU if you’ve been in a similar situation. When you’re injured AF you would give anything to be able to frolic around Balboa Park, work your ass off, and nearly puke on PR day or die in the jungle with everyone else.

Do not take being healthy for granted. It is truly a gift, and it’s SO easy to forget that. If you are tempted to go off and do your own thing just because the workout sounds too hard or you ain’t feelin it, remember you are fortunate enough to have the ability to do the work and push yourself – however much or as little as you want (choose your own adventure!). There are times when you feel like a sloth in quicksand at the beginning of a workout, but end up dominating that shit. Or surprise yourself at how quickly you busted out that 25/50/75/100(???) burpees/v-ups/lunges/push-ups. Or PR on PR day, even if it’s only by 0.104829 laps (don’t care what anyone says, it totally counts and deserves Dark Horse donuts). Use your health and go out there and get ‘em – you never know what you might be missing out on if you don’t try. Hell, it could even be something as simple as making one new connection or high fiving a mega babe in the tribe. And honestly, have you ever regretted participating, regardless of how hard you worked? Have you ever walked away with your grumpy face on thinking “man, that was fucking laaaaaaame. Now my whole day is ruined!”? We didn’t think so.
Don’t show up for the vibes and back out when shit gets weird/hard/not what you expected. If you’re going to show up, SHOW UP 100%. Get out of your comfort zone and be open to the idea of pushing yourself. For all aspects of NP. For your tribe. For your community. For those who can’t. And most importantly, for yourself. Don’t sell yourself short. You are not a yellow Starburst. You are a motherfuckin pink Starburst and you can do anything. Put in the work to the best of your ability. Reap the rewards. Walk away with a big fat goofy smile on your face.

xoxo,

Stemily, your resident #shortandsensitive crew
