You’ve been bit by the bug. You’ve drank the kool-aid (OHHHH-YEEEAAAAAHHHH). You’re addicted. People are starting to notice. You’re friends, family, coworkers are all seeing a different side of you. A smiling, optimistic side. NOTHING can get you down. Last time you cried?? Maybe last Friday because you were laughing so hard at a joke that Steve told at the workout (Steve definitely didn’t not write this blog post). If being happy and positive and energetic all the time is weird, BRING ON THE WEIRD.
ISSUE: WHY on God’s green earth would you keep it all to yourself?
MOTIVATION: A CONTEST THIS WEEK to see who can recruit the most people.Bring people to Wednesday’s and Friday’s workout, find Jake and show him how many people you brought, WIN some SWEET gear that will prepare you for winter courtesy of The North Face. Don’t know the first thing about recruiting? Keep reading.
STEP 1: Don’t keep it to yourself. Recruit the people you talk to or see the most on a daily basis. Ok so maybe you don’t keep it to yourself. Maybe you’ve gone through the conversation over and over with your friends. Your relatives. Your neighbor. You’re so dang positive and pushy about your friend in Seattle trying November Project that they hang up the phone if you mention it (but call you right back because it’s a joke haha lol rotfl). At some point, they’ll probably check it out so just keep pushing the issue. This is good. You’ve completed STEP 1.
STEP 2: Don’t keep it to yourself. Recruit the people you don’t know, met once, walk past in the grocery store. This is the tough one. Why? Because from a young age, we’ve been told STRANGER DANGER so when we talk about walking up to a ‘stranger’ and talking to them about something, both parties are hesitant. But I’ll give you some tips and hints RIGHT NOW.
- Compliments: Starting a conversation with a compliment usually eases you into the conversation pretty quickly. Yes, be careful of what you compliment because you don’t want to seem like you’re hitting on them or you’re a creep. SHOES are a good go-to. Try this one out: “Hey, rad kicks! Do you run?” They answer yes, you invite them to November Project. They answer no, you invite them to November Project because we’re NOT a run club. November Project secretly tricks ‘non-runners’ into running (that’s what they call themselves…it’s a lie, they can run) and tricks ‘runners’ into cross-training. It’s a WIN-WIN.
- Skip the small talk: No one likes it, it wastes time, get rid of it. Why discuss the weather when it doesn’t matter (because we’re weatherproof)? “Hey, have you heard of November Project?” is a GREAT conversation starter. Either they have and you’re in or they haven’t and you’re in. If they run away, you’ve trained well enough to chase them down, pin them down, and explain to them….oh wait, that’s NOT what you should do? Rejection SUCKS. We all know it. But think of it this way, if they run away or completely shut you down, at least you planted the seed. Tell them to google it as they walk away. THEY WILL. Your work is done there.
- Find similar people: An easy way to recruit is to find the people that are already up at 6:30AM, out on a run, or in gym clothes.
- Recruit with a friend: Have someone with you when you recruit your neighbor or the cashier at the coffee shop or the person in line behind you at the coffee shop or the person sitting across from you at the coffee shop (I’m just assuming this is what life is like when you drink coffee). When you’re walking with your friend from NP, challenge each other to recruit that person walking towards you. No one can turn down a good dare. When you’re runpooling home from the workout with friends, recruit other runners (See #3). Having a support system to joke around with when the person sprints away makes it WAY better.
I could lay down some more but that’s good for now. Consider this PART 1.
RECRUIT EVERYTHING. RACE EVERYTHING.
SPREAD LOVE.
