Have you ever tried to recruit someone to NP and their reason for not coming sounds something like…”I’m not a runner.” I know I have and recently my simple reply is one word…yet. This response is often met with a confused look to which I say, “You’re not a runner yet.” None of us kicked off our running careers by going out and crushing a half marathon (well maybe a couple of you freaks of nature did) but instead we started off by setting goals to run for 10 minutes straight or to complete a 5km run and eventually that 5km run became and 10km run, which led to a faster 10km or 21km and so on and so forth.
YET is a powerful word…when added to the end of an “I can’t…” sentence it provides hope – it suggests that things don’t need to be fixed, that with time, effort, determination, and grit, it (whatever it is for you) can be achieved. So a statement of “I can’t do 4 hills in 30 minutes” becomes “I can’t do 4 hills in 30 minutes yet”…pretty cool hey…hear the difference one simple three letter word can make.
Think back to before you started committing to 3 mornings a week – would you have considered yourself a morning person? So when someone says, I’m not a morning person, reply with yet. And then take the opportunity to tell your story.
Thank you all for choosing to just show up this morning. November Project embraced two more cities this morning at the Summit and while we may not have been running Harvard Stadium with thousands (& yes, I mean thousands…have you seen the photos?!) of other tribies, from afar we showed our support for this incredible free fitness movement that is truly more about community than it is fitness.
