I once had someone come up to me after a Monday workout and say, “I hate Mondays” to which I replied, “Mondays in general or NP Mondays?” “Monday NPs – I’m just not into circuits” was his response. As I walked to my car I thought to myself, “Well, while NP is for everyone, it not always for everyone – at least he loves Wednesdays and Fridays, we’ll work on Mondays.” It makes me really happy to report that this person is a regular Wednesday, Friday, and Monday tribe member – this is the power of the community and, I believe, adult recess!
Structure, predictability, consistency – these tend to be the reason I hear when people tell me why they choose to come to NP on Wednesdays and Fridays but not Mondays. At the stairs and hill they know exactly where to go, what to expect, they can push hard, they chase others, etc – I get it but I challenge any of you who think you won’t get a good sweat on Mondays to come out and try it. Or ask anyone who was there today about the “you can do anything for 5 minutes workout.” I’m pretty confident that they’d say they got a good workout. Mondays are special days – they allow us to explore the city – Edmonton becomes our playground. Mondays give us a chance to play a little more – aka adult recess. And it’s on Mondays that burpee, Hoisty-J and Bojan form is perfected – if you are wondering what Hoisty-Js and Bojans are, come out on a Monday!
There actually is structure, predictability, and consistency on Mondays. You can count on the fact that there will always be a bounce, a “good morning!”, 30 minutes of movement, a group picture, hugs, high 5s and the shared energy of the tribe. That’s structure. There’s consistency and predictability in the fact that we will meet every Monday at 6 AM and you can be assured that you will not be alone. So be comfortable with some of the unknowns – the place, the workout, the exercises, and just trust us when we say it will be the best way to kick off your week!
