I am going to start this post off acknowledging that I am not a great example of the advice I am about to offer, but I think it is an important issue that we need to reflect upon.
Is it ok to say NO to NP? or to the weekend long run that everyone is going on? or to the race that your friends are all doing? or to the free class that’s being offered? YES!!
This summer I have seen so many people accomplish amazing goals and physical feats. Disciplined training, hard work, dedication, and focus have to lead to these successes. Accompanying those wonderful accomplishments I have also seen fatigue and injury. I know that rest and recovery can be difficult to do. I know that the energy of the tribe, the social networks established with weekend run groups, and the draw of accepting all of the invitations because one doesn’t want to miss out on the fun, are appealing and often outweigh the desire to take the time needed to recover. I also know that we can deny that an injury exists or ignore that nagging tightness/ache/soreness because we don’t want to acknowledge that some time off is required. Sometimes we view the need to sleep in or take a day off as a sign of weakness and tell ourselves that we should be able tough it out or work through the pain.
I think we need to take time to ask ourselves, is it worth it? If I need to modify an NP workout because I am injured or because my body is exhausted, maybe I should instead be taking the time to sleep, rest, recover and rehabilitate. We need to respect our bodies – they are amazing machines that will do amazing things but they will also burn out if we don’t look after them properly. If we fail to maintain them, rest them, and honour them, they will not work optimally. They will sieze up, malfunction, and quit working.
The good news – once you take the time required to repair, rest, recuperate – the tribe will be there waiting to welcome you back. You’re run group will not leave you in the dust. There will still be free workouts in the park and your friends won’t forget about you.
Remember, it’s ok to say no, in fact, it’s sometimes better to say no.
There will be times when a break is the best gift we can give ourselves.
