As I wrap up this week I feel inspired. While worn out, I don’t know if it is the weather, the hectic nature of the last month, or all of the above, I have been surrounded this week by messages and people who challenged me to reflect, aim high, and never forget mywhy.
What’s my why? What are those values that I hold deeply that get me out of bed early, that prompt me to bundle up when the weather is cold, and have me lacing up my sneakers with hopes that one day I can grow Elsa-esque eyelashes? It is this big picture stuff that, as I watched Bill crowd surf Wednesday for his 90th birthday, I reflected upon. What is it that will bring me joy when I am 90? What is it that I hope I will be doing and who will I be surrounded by? What is the journey I will take to get to that moment?
It is the choices that I make now which align with my why that will get me to my “crowdsurfing” moment. Just like each of you who chose to come out this morning, I am creating space for those values – for joy, connection, fitness, and challenge. Whether we are consciously aware of it or not showing up to NP is satisfying some core value for you otherwise you wouldn’t do it. If you aren’t sure what that is, I challenge you to reflect upon it. Knowing your deeper why will make it easier when the hills days are hard (it was hard for me today and I had to walk more than I would normally. Sometimes I can hard on myself for walking, but not today. Today I allowed it to simply be because today was more about community than the challenge).
Our values are “not destinations but rather directions” (Natsumi Sawada). What directs you?
