During the mois de la francophonie, we are reminded of the importance of celebrating French Canadian cultures and of promouvoir la langue française. French is, of course, one of Canada’s deux langues officielles (with the third being Franglais or Frenglish, a sophisticated combination of English and French frequently utilisé dans la région d’Ottawa-Gatineau).
En tant que communauté that prides itself on inclusion, la langue est un facteur that is important to consider. Did you know that Francophones make up more than 34% de la population d’Ottawa? That’s about 340,000 personnes qui peuvent se sentir that much more comfortable when greeted with a ‘‘Hello, Bonjour!’’. Even if you are not a native French speaker or feel comfortable with your French skills, un petit effort can go a long way in making someone feel included.
Consider the following options:
Hi, my name is __, welcome! → → Bonjour, je m’appelle __, bienvenue!
You can do it! → → Vous êtes capable!
Last burpee! → → Dernier burpee!
Actually, 5 more burpees! → → En fait, 5 burpees de plus!
