Hangin’ Tough (IND)

With the saddest of hearts, the tribe said “Bye, Bye, Bye” to Howard as an NP Indy mainstay as we wish him well on his move to Charlotte and sent him off with a Boy/Girl Band workout.

The Workout:  The Anatomy of a Boy Band

Everybody knows there is a formula for making up a perfect boy or girl band.  You need to right mix to get hits.  So we took the boy band formula, found the corresponding muscle group, and now we’re at the top of the charts.

Member #1 of the boy band is The Cute One or The Talent.  The ticket seller, the one people come to see.  So, naturally the corresponding body part is the ass.  At the first station, Justin Timberlake welcomed you with 20 Glute Bridges

Member #2 is the 2nd in command.  This one can sing, but just can’t outshine The Cute One no matter how hard he tries.  This body part is the abs and Drew Lachey welcomed you to station #2 with Cross Flutter Kicks.

On the south sidewalk you found Member #3 – The Bad Boy/the Crazy One.  Obviously the corresponding body part is the chest and arms so Scary Spice gave you 20 push-ups

The fourth member is The Dancer – never can hit the high note but can drop it low and usually makes his living on the middle 8 dance solo.  Howie from the Backstreet Boys gave those dancing legs 20 squat jumps

And finally is the fifth member, or, The “Other” One.  Who is this person?  How old are they? And, what the hell do they do?  Good question, but you would miss them if they weren’t there.  This muscle corresponds to the triceps and Danny Wood from the New Kids gave you a wink as you did 20 tricep dips.

One Note (albeit a long one):

We learned a lot at the November Project Summit this weekend in Boston.  Too much for this, or any single blog, and we will continue to expound on what we learned in the future.  But, I had one main take away that I have thought about from the moment I crossed that finish line on Wachusett Mountain, and that is the power leaving your comfort zone. Casey and I attempted and completed our first trail marathon on what the winner (NPSF’s Paddy a profession trail runner) called the “hardest marathon he has ever run”.  In a race that saw a LOT of DNFs, including those from very experienced ultramarathoners, I was fueled by the inspiration I have received from this NP Indy tribe.  From what I saw happen last week as we hit our recruiting goal, to those that I have personally encouraged to run their first distance races, first triathlon, even attend their first workout.  I have urged people to go way outside of their comfort zone to accomplish something that they probably never thought they could do.  These people inspired me to do the same, which is why I signed up for the race.  I couldn’t ask people to do something I wasn’t fully committed to doing myself.

So, my message is this: true accomplishment is felt when you do something you think you have no business doing.  This is a fitness group, so this is certainly applicable to fitness, races, and competitions…but it goes way beyond that.  When you are staring at something and the pit of your stomach drops out from the fear of even attempting it….THAT is when you say “I’m in”.  Because, I promise you, as soon as that moment is over, you will never feel more satisfied and proud of yourself.  Even if it doesn’t work out the first time.  You know you have the strength to take that step and you can do it again.  Fitness, work, relationships…whatever it is.  Life gets so much better when you are uncomfortable.

The best part about this is that you are never alone in these attempts, and you don’t need to be.  You have a tribe, a community, of people who will do whatever it takes to get you to where you want to be.  Either right by your side, along the way, or right at the finish.  They’ll be the first to congratulate you or help you up if you fail the first time and get you back on track no matter what it is.  Fair warning, it is going to hurt.  If it is TRULY a risk, it will hurt.  But, that pain means you are invested, that are you are passionate.  And this pain it is WAY better than the pain you feel when playing it safe and wishing you could be like the others who are going for it.  You will end up where you need to go, I am confident in that. If you ever hit a point where you don’t think you can do it, regardless of what it is….I want you to call me personally (my number is at the bottom of the blog) and I will get you there.  And I’m sure many of the November Project Indy tribe would offer the same.

Lastly, don’t discount your accomplishments or what scares you.  There will always be somebody who ran a longer distance, climbed a higher mountain, made more money, or formed a “better” connection with a person.  But, they started by facing that same fear.  And, if they didn’t, then you should feel sorry for them because accomplishing anything won’t be nearly as sweet. You are all capable of this already, I know because the first time you woke up and hugged a stranger, and yelled to the sky, and ran an NP workout you had no clue what to expect, you did it.  But don’t stop there, aim higher, build a bigger knot in your stomach.  Because that is when life really gets going.  This summer, the NP Indy tribe will be doing some AMAZING things, both on our Wednesday and Friday mornings, and beyond.  A lot of it will be crazy, weird, vibe inducing workouts as usual.  But some of it will be meant to draw us out of our comfort zone.  I implore you to do it all, the juice will be worth the squeeze.  And you know we’ll be there to help you every step of the way.

Ain’t too proud to beg,
