Emily & Will (YEG)

Today’s workout was all about movement – just trying to keep our bodies moving to stay warm. While my body was feeling the chill my heart definitely wasn’t because I knew that at the end of the workout we’d be giving out the positivity award to this absolutely badass father daughter duo. I didn’t want to hold people up from getting out of the cold so while the explanation of the positivity award was a little rushed the sentiment and deservingness of this award is truly there. Over the years at NP I have truly loved seeing the family bond that some members have and how it grows and fosters alongside a commitment of health and fitness together. I can think of many examples but the King family is absolutely top tier. They embody the core of NP for many reasons and I am grateful for the opportunity to get to know them. They are exceptionally kind, always willing to help out, and are always putting in the effort at the workouts – truly a constant source of inspiration. I am going to shut it and let these two recall a recent race of theirs but if you have the chance make sure to say hi and get to know the whole family. We’ll see you on Friday at Walterdale hill (yay its not going to be -40 woo!!!)

Keep being awesome,

Rob

If you are like me, when you discover something new, a restaurant, a book, or a recent experience you just want to share it in hopes it will bring someone joy.
November Project is something we all share in, something my family shares in, something that brings us joy. My daughter Emily told me about NP, I was excited, shared it with Martha and as often as we are able, “we just show up”.

When I wore a younger man’s clothes, I called myself a runner. My wardrobe consisted of mostly race shirts and old pairs of running shoes. I loved running and in someway felt it helped me to become a better person. This past August Emily completed her third half marathon in as many years. Emily is a runner. Our love for running is something we share just it has not been at the same time, but one generation apart.

In September Emily was invited by her uncle and his daughter to run the marathon relay in Sacramento California, December, 2022. The two teams were in need of a fourth runner and Emily asked if I would run with her. NP is a very big part of my weekly fitness but this was going to require me to raise my game. By November Emily and I were running together several days a week plus NP, all carefully crafted by Emily’s running coach Carla. I was not saying it out loud yet but I was becoming a runner again.

We trained, we strategized, together we flew to SFO, shared the drive to Sacramento, went to the Marathon Expo, and on the night before the race we watched “Chariots of Fire”. On December fourth Emily and I lined up together with close to 9000 other runners to begin our run. For the next 2 hours and a little bit, stride for stride we shared in our love of running and a magical half marathon experience.

NP was never far away from our thoughts, before during and after our run we received encouragement and congratulations from our NP Community. Our first NP day back Rob and Lazina excitedly asked us about our experience. I told them all about our race, the weekend and how very special it was to run with Emily. Rob replied “That sounds totally amazing, would you be willing to share this story with us in the Blog?”
