Community

Soooo…. we planned today’s workout just a wee bit too close to today’s procession of two fallen Edmonton Police Service officers.

Not sure why we did that but we were certainly inventive in finding where to park. 😉

My new role is busy… it’s the beginning which means there isn’t much chance to pop over to midday community gatherings to be part of today’s acknowledgement + showing gratitude.

Perhaps this was our small way of being in community with our follow Edmontonians… in the wee hours.

It was pretty special seeing the Leg lit up in blue.

Totally switching gears….

I thought I’d share something that I got to be part of this weekend.

My very good friend, Tim, is learning about his indigineity. He’s about 50. He didn’t grow up surrounded by his culture and is now taking the time to learn and share indigenous culture with his friends.

This meant that on Sunday, I got invited to a smudge, pipe ceremony and a circle of learning. I’ve been to these types of ceremonial opportunities in the past but there was something very special about this.

Why?

Well, first, my friend is learning about his own culture at this stage in his life. I think that’s awesome. And really leans into being growth mindset oriented, which I am all about.

Second, he and his family gathered so many people from different circles in their lives. There were CEOs, families, business leaders, kids, cousins, Indigenous Elders, and more all gathered in the same room. That was quite a diverse room if I do say so myself. I loved it.

Why I especially loved about it was for how curious and open everyone was with each other and with the experience we got to be part of.

This room felt a lot like… Canada. It was a room full of great people who were accepting of our differences and open to learning about each other.

As time passes, I mostly (read: only) want to be around growth mindset oriented people. It comes back to a very basic lesson my Mom taught me… always surround yourself with people who are better than you (in whatever the thing is that you’re trying to be good at). I really do think that room was an important lesson and reminder for me to be open, curious, and full of friendship for those who are different than me.

Two thoughts in one today. Sometimes that’s how it goes.
