Block Party (YEG)

Today, we held a good ol’ block party.

When I was a kid… let me rephrase… 25 years ago, the people on my block would have what was called a Block Party. I don’t think they’re a thing anymore… but back then, they were. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, it was the equivalent of when you have what is called a “potluck” at work. Instead of holding it in your lunch room or kitchen, it is held on the driveway or in the garage of someone that lives on your block (neighbourhood). And that is the origins of the name Block Party (not to be confused with Bloc Party). It does not come from Babylonian times, but rather from approximately 25 years ago. I once got in trouble at one of these neighbourhood parties because during an intense game of Capture the Flag, I crashed into the food table, spilling EVERYTHING. My team didn’t even with that game of Capture the Flag. What a complete waste for getting grounded. Grounded is when you do something bad and you parents make you lie on the ground and stare at the roof when you want to go play with your friends.

This is getting off track. Our block party was pretty amazing. I was laughing the entire time, especially when an unnamed participant looked me right in the eye, said “F this” and broke into one of the establishments for a drink. Then she picked up the phone and called the cops on herself, but not before refueling with a pint. I know people don’t like burpees, but that is going a bit far… or is it. Next time we do this, we will see how many establishments we can break into.

Now that we have all of the serious stuff out of the way, today’s workout was both hilarious and hard AF. I was laughing the entire time I’d see someone get up from a wall sit and start running around the block. As for how tough it is, my meter is based on tired the other leaders’ faces are. Andrew actually asked how much time was left at one point. There were 8 minutes left, and I feared for my life after the look he gave me when I told him that. I knew Jen was tired because she tried to explain how we would gather everyone back to the gazebo to me, but it was incoherent and it sounded like that one character from Malcolm in the Middle. And the tell-tale sign with Tyler being tired, is when he starts to sing his favourite songs to distract himself. His rendition of Bon Jovi’s Bed of Roses was on point.

Enjoy walking for the next two days.

See you kids Wednesday!

Note: Today’s workout was completely original and not adapted from one of two Wisconsin tribes.
