All the stairs (LAX)

295 stairs up. Run around the corner. 220 stairs down. Run around the corner. Repeat for 40 minutes. Simple, but extremely effective! Ninja workouts are some of my favorite because the silent element brings added focus. You tune in to how your body is feeling, you hear every breath, and the rhythm of the pitter-patter of feet hitting the stairs is music to your ears. Joyful tunes for a few of us, and death metal for the rest.

Focus is an element to life that many of us lose from time to time. I had lunch with a friend yesterday and we talked about losing focus in different aspects of our lives. Sometimes we lose focus of the big picture, and other times of the little details. I’m not going to pretend to be some wise sage, or Mr. Know-It-All, but I feel like yesterday I gave a randomly good piece of advice. Some of you won’t understand the reference, but those of you that play video games will. In open world games like GTA, Morrowind, or the newest Zelda, there is the world map feature. You bring it up and see where you have to go (Big Picture). Once you know the direction you have to travel in you go back to the game and explore the world that you’re in (Little Picture). Now finding balance is the goal. If we could just open the world map and click on where we wanted to be then we lose out on all of the fun little things. If we don’t use the world map though, then we’re just walking around aimlessly until we get pissed off that we have no idea where we are going. So what does that have to do with real boring life where we don’t get to fight crazy beasts or shoot lightning out of our hands?

Well that’s a pretty deep discussion, but I’ll keep it short and running related. A lot of us set goals. Goals are great because they add intention to our training and our races. However, sometimes we just set race goals. I want to run a 3:30 marathon, or I want to PR my 5k. Those are great goals to set, but that’s only the big picture. The little picture goals are those training goals. Weekly milage goals, long run pace goals, timing your playlist perfectly goals. Little goals will breed small accomplishments, which will lead to more confidence. More confidence breeds mental toughness, and that is what propels you to achieve your big picture goals. To wrap up this TL:DR blog, balance your focus on the little things and the big things. Take a step back from time to time to make sure you’re headed in the right direction.

Do Good, LA
