A few things I noticed

Hola mis amigos! Como estan?

I’m soon to be wrapping up this warm time in Mexico. I’ll see ya on the hill this coming FriYAY!

I thought I’d share a few things I noticed or paid attention to over the past couple of weeks:

  • My RA symptoms are zero. The moment I walked out of the airport, I felt like a non-RA version of myself. I announced this several times over the first few days. Now that I’m fully settled into this warm weather life, I realize that I haven’t mentioned it since those first few days. It’s not a thing to even think about here. That’s a nice feeling.
  • A working trip is not just all work and no play. Yes, Casey (my hubby) and I made the decision to move our work lives here for a couple of week, to manage and help calm my RA. It wasn’t all work though. Between zoom meetings and work deliverables, we took some quick walks on the beach (rather than walks around the block or across the office I guess), stepped into the beachside pools for a quick dip, and cut up fresh guava, pineapple, mamey (google it… a new fruit for me), mango and oranges for a quick snack. One workday, with my laptop in front of me, I saw a whale and a stingray (it fully jumped and flipped out of the water!). All within maybe 2-3 hours. That was very cool.
  • It’s haaard for me to eat in restaurants. Being vegetarian, it’s tough spending time in a place that is so meat and fish heavy. Mexico is that. I’m dying for greens! Like literally withering. Hahaha. I jest. While it was hard, a few diligent google searches brought us some great restaurants with amazing food options for those night we chose to go out for dinner or the odd brunch out.
  • Car exhaust hits you in the face when running. I searched for running trails in the two cities we spent time in on this trip. It was slim pickings for sure. It was either run along the main roads through town (with some oceanviews along the way) or go into city centers and break your ankle on very old cobblestone streets. So, along the main roads it had to be which, of course, means that there are cars for parts of any run… and yes, car exhaust. During our first Sunday here (which was in Manzanillo), I thought I was relegated to the side of the highway for a morning run but no, the road was closed down so people and families could run, walk, cycle, etc. It was so nice to have a good stretch of road to spread out… and also not have to worry about dodging cars and giant trucks or have car exhaust in my face.
  • A different kind of weekend is never a bad thing. Seeing as we were having a 9-5 kind of trip to Mexico, we were inside or on a covered patio working most of each workday. Evenings and weekends were our main time to explore. We took full advantage of that. We visited the main center in Manzanillo (and found a small shop pumping out fresh tortillas… obviously I ran across the street to go get some), visited San Pancho (near PV), and did a day trip to hike and swim along to coast near Boca de Tomatlan…. and a full beach + book reading day was in their too.
  • Aguas frescas is everywhere here! Though I changed my wine drinking habits some years ago (to manage my RA), I still sometimes feel a bit left out when in a social gathering; consuming alcohol is a cultural norm. Here, there are many different kinds of aguas frescas del dia (a water of the day!) to choose from. I’ve had flavoured waters such as tamarind, passion fruit, guava, pineapple, soursop, hibiscus, and cucumber. Who doesn’t want that?
  • You don’t need much equipment to get your sweat on. We know this one well. Don’t we? During the first week, I’m quite glad I brought some bands and gliders on the trip. It was nice having them there as a reminder to move my body. During the second half of this trip, the Puerto Vallarta condo we’re staying in has quite a good gym so that’s been easy. Knowing that I’m one to move, it’s been great to stay connected to my fitness through simple workouts that can be done with little or a lot of space if needed.

I had different things to notice on a different kind of trip away.

See ya later this week.

I heard mean Rob showed up this morning….
