There’s long been a misconception in the United States that Black women don’t run. In 2009, Black Girls RUN! was formed to correct that narrative.
Created to combat the health diseases that disproportionately affect Black women, Black Girls RUN! sets out to create an encouraging environment where all women feel empowered to move. BGR! Sets out to make fitness and healthy living a priority lifestyle for Black women, to be a MOVEment that makes their community healthier on the pavement through the power of running. BGR! Is shifting the paradigm that their community is sedentary and unhealthy through their local running chapters and increasing representation of Black women at running events across the country. Through representation, BGR! encourages more women and children to join their MOVEment.
10+ years in and Black Girls Run! is just getting started, With over 70 different chapters, BGR! is making running accessible to women across the country through their free meet ups, resource sharing through their BGR! University, national city tours, and an annual national conference, Sweat With Your Sole.
Black Girls Run! is an organization that November Project has long admired. Before stepping into her current role as owner & CEO in 2018, Jay Ell Alexander had been involved with BGR! since 2012 as a brand manager and public relations director. We were honored when Jay Ell joined the November Project Board in 2021 leading our marketing committee and getting involved with marketing and brand strategy. While her board tenure recently ended, the connection between BGR! and the November Project Board remains strong as we recently welcomed BGR! Development Coordinator Alexis Hendrick to the board, bringing her invaluable experience in event management, public relations, community engagement, and passion for running and fitness along for the ride. We’re grateful for the lasting partnership between November Project and Black Girls RUN! and look forward to continuing to collaborate.
