Let’s Do the Time(d) War, Again (Ottawa)

Good morning! Thank you for joining us on our “visit” to the Canadian War Museum today. Who knew that that the exhibits contained so many squats and lunges?! Oh well, at least tickets were free.

Today’s post is brought to you by NP Ottawa’s local DJ/producer/generally fantastic human, Dean. We are lucky to have him (and his dog) as part of our community. Dean (and Bryson), we’re glad you’re here. See below for a closer look at the music featured in today’s workout.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Today’s playlist is meant to highlight Irish music and musicians. No green beer here.

The Mahones kick things off. From Kingston, Ontario, this group helped establish the Celtic punk sound that grew and influenced a couple of other bands on this list. Flogging Molly covering Bob Dylan’s The Times They Are A Changin’ for Amnesty International was a special find as I was looking for songs. 4-15-13 by the Dropkick Murphys is the Boston band’s tribute to those impacted by the marathon bombing. As an aside, the band is known for being vocal supporters of unions in establishing better labour environments and also for working to raise funds to reduce harm caused by addiction – the band is hosting their second Lockdown Livestream St. Patrick’s Day show tonight, so check them out on Facebook or YouTube – no ticket required.

Back to the playlist, we sway in a different direction with the swinging Dancing in the Moonlight by Thin Lizzy who are from Ireland (I had no idea). This song was recorded in Toronto and is apparently about young love. U2’s Sunday Bloody Sunday is about the 30 January 1972 “Bloody Sunday” when British police shot 26 peaceful protesters demonstrating against the internment without trial of 342 people suspected of being part of the Irish Republican Army. 13 of those shot were killed instantly, another died later as a result of their injuries. Many more were injured by shrapnel and rubber bullets. Next, Delores O’Riordan leads the Cranberries in Dreams. O’Riordan died in 2018 from intoxication that led to drowning and we lost an incredible talent. Finally, The Corrs’ Breathless rounds it out because if you’d been working out for the 30 minutes, you may just have finished breathless too.
