First Base (YEG)

As I set my alarm last night for 5AM and my phone informed me that I would be getting a grand total of 5 hours of sleep I seriously considered sending Nadim a note saying that I’d gotten home late from Victoria and that I’d likely not make the workout. It would have been a completely valid reason/excuse for missing NP and I know Nadim would have understood as tired, grumpy Jen is also no-fun Jen. That thought however, lasted all of 5 seconds before I reminded myself of the commitment I’ve made to the tribe and myself. And really, would I want to start my 41st year by missing its first NP workout? Nope!

So when my alarm sounded, I’m pretty sure I kicked off the day with an expletive, rolled myself out of bed, pulled my workout gear on, prepared a couple water bottles full of Nuun and headed out the door. I was tired and felt like a zombie driving through the city. I figured a little warm-up run would help me wake up and luckily I had enough time to park at the big ball diamond so I could run to the small ball diamond. Now here’s when some cool things started to happen. Just as I was about to start my run another car pulled up and an NP tribe member jumped out. While we often plan pre-runs, we didn’t try to coordinate this meet-and-run and yet we found ourselves running together and catching up as we made our way to today’s destination. About halfway there, another tribe member met us on the path and the three of us ran the rest of the way together, hearing about one another’s weekends and run plans. If any one of us had chosen not to show up today, even with legitimate reasons, the run to this morning’s location would have been less enjoyable. If any one of you who came this morning had chosen not to show up to the ball diamond our base stations would have been sparse and partners difficult to find. We all play a role in building this community and sharing our energy. I am always so grateful to each of you who choose, not because you have to but because you want to, to show up. Without you, Nadim and I would have been stuck at first base all morning!
