It’s pretty easy at the end of a year to wish it gone, to say “good riddance,” and to gratefully acknowledge its end. But this is different than welcoming in and moving toward what is to come in the new year. There are lots of things in the world and in others that are beyond our control–and those things will happen regardless of how we feel about them. But a majority of our experience in 2018 will be due to what we move toward. Not what we passively observe or reluctantly do, but what we full-throttle, wholeheartedly, passionately move toward.
We can look at this morning to think about how we are moving toward the year. It was a bright sunrise over a brutally cold, windy and snowy field–and despite the conditions telling us it would most definitely be more comfortable to stay in bed, or at the very least at home–despite the challenge of finding enough of the right layers and gear to protect us from the wind, and the snow (that we most definitely would put our hands in/on), and that still allow us to move athletically–despite the late night of festivities we most likely partook in for New Years Eve, we still had an opportunity to choose movement, to choose to see the sun rise, to choose hugs & community, and to choose a workout with November Project as the first thing of our new year. We could move toward all that, with intention and purpose. It was definitely intentional, because we all know that no one ended up out there by accident or by passive happenstance.
So whether you’re new or have years of experience with NP, let’s look at 2018 as a year of paying attention and doing this because this is what we want to move toward. Let’s not take it for granted, which we could do either by passively not showing up, or by mindlessly showing up. Instead, let’s take full advantage of this amazing fitness community we’ve got. And while we’re at it, let’s show up for, and move towards, the other important stuff in life that really matters to us. There are so many options out there that it’s way too easy to just wander around occupied, but not really be choosing what we put our time and attention toward. Just like when you eat at a big buffet restaurant. In MN when I was a kid, it was Old Country Buffet… you know what I’m talking about. There’s plenty of food to eat, so regardless of what you fill your plate with, at the end of the meal, you won’t be hungry anymore (just like we can fill our time with just about anything). But if you just eat all the things in front of you with no thoughtfulness, you probably won’t end up feeling satisfied and you’ll almost certainly end up with a plate so full that your jello mixes in with your mashed potatoes, and that’s just gross. However, a carefully selected plate with satisfying elements that make a meal and that give you just the tastes you were actually looking for, well, that feeds you differently. Life is a giant buffet, and if 2018 is gonna be better than 2017 (#bye2017), then move toward what you want to “eat” this year–what your body and mind really crave and will be fueled by.

Our breakfast at #destinationdeck this morning included an appetizer of hugs, and then was a hearty helping of team competition, plastic easter eggs, sprinting, burpees, and a small side of “I’m a star” jumps, with human-sled relay races (wearing giant trash bags) for dessert. Delicious, nutritious, and there’s more where that came from, every Monday morning, forever.
Keep moving this year, move toward the year you want. Let’s keep changing the world.

2018 has some awesome stuff in store:
first up, the #MLsunrise6K will be happening on Monday, MLK Jr. day, Jan 15th. We know it’s cold, but what better reason to keep getting yourself outside and logging those miles than knowing you’ve got a race in 2 weeks!? Let’s get ready, no matter what!
Stay tuned for more details and a date for an NP_BOS social… it’s been too long since we’ve had one, and it’s coming soon!
#FindTheDeckFebruary is happening again. Last year we made the February #destinationdecks so much easier to #justshowup to because they were in the same location every week, which meant less getting lost in the cold dark mornings and one less reason excuse to not show up. Location will be announced at the end of January.
Chris Payne is getting married in 2018. They picked a date: 8/18/18 (isn’t that cute!?) We know it’s not really a workout related announcement, but we’ll probably drop down and do spontaneous burpees at the wedding, being sure to scream count “ONE” after the first one.
