Here at middle management of NP, we LOVE guest blogs for several reasons. First, a good middle manager delegates and does as little work as possible. Mainly, we stand in front of you jabbering all the time, so our voices start to sound like your mom’s did in high school, and eventually you just tune us out and do you own thing. Yeah, we noticed. This voice comes to you from a lady who’s been in and out of torrid love affairs with NP, and she tells you why. Alex Ammons is about to bring you a fresh, but familiar take on WHY YOU BELONG, and why we verbal.
My relationship with November Project often reminds me of my relationship with my ex-boyfriend: tumultuous, on and off, and kinda fraught.
The phases of my time at NP mirror, almost exactly, the phases of any relationship. There was attraction, then lust. There was a honeymoon phase where I would tell anyone who would listen about this amazing group called November Project. There was injury. Sometimes I experienced great joy and connection, and other times found myself questioning, “What am I doing? Is this right for me? Do I belong here?”
For the last year or so, my answer to that tender and oh-so-human question, “do I belong?” has been a resounding no. Moving to a different city, stepping into a new and slogging commute, and a taxing shoulder surgery have all stymied the sense of belonging I felt so deeply when I began November Project. I began to feel more and more disconnection and regularly told myself, “This group isn’t for me. I don’t belong. It’s OK – I’m just not a November Project person.”
I showed up this morning after having sworn off November Project about 15 times in the last year. And it was fucking awesome. I hugged and high-fived and giggled and got the shit kicked out of me by PR day (which apparently is WEEKLY THIS MONTH).
This morning showed me that my stories of “I don’t belong,” and “I’m not a NP person” are just that – stories. I believe that if you’re a human (or dog) who is breathing, you are a NP person. You have a tribe. You belong. I know that I do, and I know that my relationship with NP is different than the one with my ex because there’s some crazy magic in this group that keeps me coming back.
So, I’m putting a ring on it. I’m verbal-ing for Wednesday morning workouts for the foreseeable future because I believe in the power of a community where everybody belongs. Can I get a fuck yeah?
WEDNESDAY: PR DAY, 35′ on the clock for EVERYONE! 6am ONLY!
