How many of you have had to engage is this ice-breaker? I get so flustered when I have to come up with the lie. I get caught up in the moment I find myself coming up with three statements and realize after I’ve shared them that they are all truths. Oops…I feel sorry for my partner. If they could give me the eye-roll emoji in that moment I’m sure they would.
I’ve participated in many different ice-breaker activities as I’m sure most of you have. I have also facilitated many ice-breakers and have experienced that moment when you introduce it and see your audience sink into their chairs and hear those whispers in the crowd…”ugh…I hate these things.” Funny thing is, when I am in the audience, I quite often have the same sentiments.
Makes me wonder then, why and how NP is different or is it? I wonder what a new person, like Wally, this morning thought when we gathered everyone together and started jumping up and down. And then what he thought as Nadim got everyone shouting at the top of their lungs. I wonder if he was chanting too? And then, before 6:05 am, with sleep still in our eyes, we asked him to introduce himself to someone new and hug them! Wow, if you’re not a fan of 2 truths and a lie, how about hugging a stranger! And yet, the crazy thing is that it works! Within 5 minutes, we’re all one tribe, ready to tackle race day – to chase each other down, to be someone else’s rabbit, to go a little bit further than last week, or to set a baseline for next month. And when time is called, that newbie is no longer a newbie. They are a part of the community and before they depart they are once again embraced but this time it’s with someone that they shared a common experience with. That’s pretty powerful. I like to imagine that when someone asks them how their morning was they’ll describe the workout and then attempt to describe the energy. And as much as they try, they will falter and will tell said person that they need to #justshowup and see for themselves how amazing it is.
My hope is that Wally and all of our newbies left this morning feeling welcomed, connected & energized. I also hope the same thing for each and every one of you who chose to come this morning. I hope that this morning someone encouraged you, that you cheered someone else one, that you met someone new, that you received and gave at least 2 hugs and that you continue to share your positive energy out with the world!
After all of that, I am going to conclude by declaring that NP is the ultimate ice-breaker!
Great job today crushing #raceday!! See you all Friday for some hills for breakfast!
