Sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to do. Like eat your broccoli.
Sometimes you try things that you don’t like and you don’t want to try them again. Like the workout we created for #destinationdeck last Monday.
And sometimes your tribe leaders decide, like stern parents, that maybe if you try it again, you’ll find you like it. Maybe once isn’t enough to say something is bad or we don’t like it. I once met someone who said, “I’ll try anything three times.” Which is a little bolder and more adventurous than the old adage of trying anything once. It’s so true, sometimes once just isn’t enough to learn what you need to learn from the experience.
One of the most important lessons to be gained from the workout, both times we tried it, is that we are always learning, growing, and changing–if we let ourselves be transformed. The Chrises and I have led lots and lots of workouts and we learn new things ALL THE TIME. We learned important lessons from the almost-exact-same, overly-complex, hard-to-understand-but-still-really-hard workout.
Kenny Rogers said it best, “you gotta know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em…”
Hold ’em: Whether it’s a Monday workout design, or running a 5k, a marathon, a full tour, or trying something new in life outside NP, it’s a valuable thing to not just give up on something you have good reason to believe in, even if it doesn’t go the way you expected the first time. Or the second time. Or even many times after that.
Fold ’em: Of course Kenny tells us we need to know when to walk away, and damn if that isn’t true. Sometimes you just gotta know the third time isn’t the charm or that persisting at something that doesn’t make you feel good or doesn’t result in you ultimately being stronger or better off isn’t badass. It’s just bad.
So, transform we will–whether by persisting through challenges and learning in the process, or by deciding to change it up and moving on. This is the process by which we get fitter, faster, fiercer, and more badass. It’s being open to transformation through the process that is the most important part.
Let’s keep changing the world (and ourselves!)
