A Thanksgiving thank you note (MKE)

Before a love letter to our great city, reflecting on the things for which we are thankful (Thanksgiving reference, no doubt), a few announcements. Be patient and read them all because there is a lot going on. Can’t get enough of the sweaty hugs? Get some of those and some non-sweaty hugs on multiple dates in the near future:

  1. Showing Up film screening. The reviews are in, six stars from all critics. This is something you do not want to miss. Details: Sunday, November 27 (this coming Sunday!) from 4:30-6:30 pm at Third Space Brewing. RSVP today, there is limited space. A beer-centive (beer incentive) is available for the first few of you who bring someone completely new. Do not question free beer, especially from Third Space. They make amazing brews.
  1. Fit Friendsgiving. Pre-Thanksgiving practice; don’t worry, it’s not just another Thanksgiving dinner. This one is with your *real* family. Details: Wednesday, November 23, immediately after the workout (i.e. 7:30 am), head to Simple Cafe, costs $12.
  1. Ergsgiving Fundraiser, aka Tergey-thon, akaka Turdey-thon. Work those back muscles with an awesome rowing workout. This is a competition, and I’ve heard there are some pretty intense prizes (e.g. endless pride and bragging rights). Details: Thursday (Thanksgiving Day), November 24, at 8:00 am, go to 101 W. Pleasant St. “Bottlehouse B” (go in the first set of doors, where you will be greeted, perhaps with a hug, and directed down to the indoor facility). Sign up here. Proceeds go towards MRS Outreach Program.
  1. Indoor Icebreaker Marathon Relay. If there are five NP MKE teams, there will be a publicly shared video of Will Bott figure skating (or attempting to) during the race. Details: January 28, 2017 (!!!) at 1 pm at the Pettit National Ice Center. Take the survey and RSVP.

Now that that’s done, let us be thankful for our amazing city/playground.

Dearest Milwaukee,

Thank you for that one last warm day. Thank you for the sunrise and for the cold, likely-filled-with-E-coli sand into which we dipped our toes.

Thank you for your people – the grizzled, bearded men and women of character who relish in your beauty together every Wednesday and Friday. These Milwaukeeans have been formed by the trying days of your winters, and have grown in appreciation for the opportunity to test their grit each week, fighting through -35 degree wind chill, blizzards, ice, and what feels like five months of perpetual darkness. Thank you for inspiring their positivity; your reminder on a building in your Third Ward – “Choose a positive thought” – is a challenge that these people accept daily. They make you better. Thank you for housing them and putting them close enough to each other geographically that they can meet, greet, eat, and sweat (an imperfect rhyme).

Thank you for your hidden gems. Thank you for Commerce Hill and for making the inflicted pain a little less painful by providing a cityscape as a sweet reward. Thank you for the puke-inducing Lake Park Bistro stairs and hill, winding through trees and rivers. Thank you for the Bronze Fonz who is so kind and inclusive, he gives everyone a double thumbs up.

In this Thanksgiving week, MilTown, we thank you for everything you have given us, specifically our community. We apologize for our teary-eyed sappiness as we proclaim our love for you. We promise to meet you and your inhabitants where you are and to make you better each day, together.

We love you, Milwaukee.

Love,

November Project MKE
