We’ve all heard the excuse: it’s too early. “This workout group thing sounds fun but it’s just too early for me.” Maybe it’s just a sign that I’ve been doing this for too long, but 6:29 no longer sounds early to me. That’s why I want to talk about my favorite subset of the NPSF movement: Early Gang.
I used to make Dan Clayton laugh when I said early gang is for you, tweeners is for your lover, and 6:30 is for everyone. But it’s true. Part of what makes 6:30 so great–all the people–is also what makes it tough. It’s too easy to stop and say hi to Jmak to discuss the trendiest BiRite ice cream flavor or ask Rebecca Bar about Game of Thrones.
Early Gang has none of those distractions. It’s all about working your ass off. It’s the same supportive environment, I promise, but it’s easier to just put your head down and grind. Today, we did an undeniably hard workout and the crew of 10 or so fucking crushed it. All I’m saying is that if you haven’t experienced it before, there’s a side to your NP experience you’re missing.
If you ever played sports (Remember the basketball workout? Maybe no one? *Facepalm*) you probably had a coach along the way who encouraged you to do more than what everyone else was doing. How can you be great if you are just a part of the crowd putting in the same amount of effort as everyone else? That’s why I love Early Gang. It’s tough, no doubt, but there’s a certain toughness that is in the air each week. A pride from the people there knowing they’re doing the most they can.
And the best part? It’s literally every week. You don’t have to make a wild plan to make it happen. Just set that alarm a little earlier and bring the same attitude.
See you next week.
P.S. Shoutout to Laura for her first Early Gang ever today!
