Looking Ahead (YEG)

With only one workout left in 2016, I’ve taken a look back at the goals I set out for 2016 and have started to figure out what I’m going to be up to in 2017. So we are clear, I did not achieve all of the goals I set out for 2016, and I am perfectly ok with it. I set my goals knowing that many of them would not be easy. In fact, I knew I wouldn’t achieve some of them, but that didn’t stop me from trying. It gave me something to work for. It was a carrot, dangling in front of me. I’m eating carrots right now. All of the goals I set for 2016 were working towards a longer term goal of where I want to be a few years from now. Some of them were direct steps towards that, and some were more indirect. And while I didn’t achieve some of those goals, it does not mean that I’m not on track. I still put the work in. So, even though I can’t cross off some goals, I know that I’m still making progress. So, what did I achieve? Well, I had set out 7 different goals for the year. 2 of them were tied to races and times. The rest had nothing to do with races. I missed one of those goals by 37 seconds. And yes, being so close after all that work, is crushing, but it makes you stronger to be able to rebound and keep pushing to achieve it. So, what does 2017 look like? I haven’t quite figured out what all of my goals will look like in 2017, but I can tell you that my race goal is still on the table. That goal is to run a 5k in under 20 minutes. That is the only race goal that I will have in 2017 and I’m setting up my race schedule for it. What does that mean? Well, it means that I’ve signed up for the 5k at every single MEC road race this year. This past year, we saw many people run their first 5k, 10k, 15k, half marathon and full marathon. Just over 3 years ago, I ran my first race. It was a MEC 15k at Whitemud Park. Why am I telling you about my goals? They say if you tell someone your goals, they can hold you accountable to them. But if you’re looking to run your first ever race or your first ever 10k, 15k or whatever k, I’m looking forward to training and racing it with you. It’s much more fun doing this with people, so I want to know who is bold enough to share some of their goals with the world?

  1. I too have signed up for the MEC series some 5 some ten. Also tagging along with my daughters as they do their first marathon while I finish a half. So all this including NP after a 30+ year vacation from running. My last major was the 1980 Van Marathon – speedier back then (3:43) so my one goal – finish the half.
