Keep Shining 🎨 (YEG)

Well, this was the last Monday in April, which means the inaugural Mural Month has come to a close. I don’t know about you, but I think Mural Month was really fun. We learned some things and visited some brand new locations, including a couple back alleys that I could never have imagined we’d ever host a workout. Today, we even had a special guest – the artist herself! (Thanks for coming out Ashley!)

Beyond just being pretty images, murals serve to add brightness, colour and life to an otherwise blank space. By beautifying and giving meaning in an otherwise mundane place, murals build community and give people pride in a space. They’re also are a very public form of art, open to everyone in the community to enjoy. It could be a giant wall of colour towering over Old Strathcona, something with deep meaning in a dirty downtown parking lot, an Edmonton icon waving to passers-by on a busy road, or a message to “Keep Shining” in an alley.

In this sense, NP has a lot in common with murals. We help bring life, excitement and play to places that are otherwise vacant at 6am. We help each other fall in love with our city and we build community. And like a mural, NP is open to anyone to enjoy – all you have to do is #justshowup.

Like today’s mural says: “Keep Shining”! Looking forward to Mural Month 2025!

Lift each other up,

Eric
