New month, new location. And damn did we crush that location.
The crew impressively crushed that beast of a hill, busted out what seemed to feel like 1,000 burpees, and ran into the water like we were born in the Pacific.
And there’s also history and a significance to Tourmaline Surfing Park – it’s a place that honors past and present surfers who have embraced the beach, surf, and camaraderie of the surfing community. Yet, the funny thing about community is how sometimes it can feel exclusive and territorial. Many know that surfers can be territorial. Locals can feel threatened when people just show up to shake up their way of life, get in their way, or inconvenience routine just a little bit.
So I ask this of you today, NPSD. Always smile. Take a deep breath. And welcome people, always, with open arms. If that one guy in the van tells you to go find a gym, just smile, and tell him to have a nice day. If cars drive by and heckle you, just smile, and wave to them.
And remember – there are those, who may not understand OUR community. They may scoff at us, make fun of us, tell us it’s not their thing. And that’s OK. Because the beauty of what we do is that we will be misunderstood. It will take longer for many to warm up to what we’re doing. Some will require more explaining. But man, when we get them out there, and they give their first hug and high five and crush that first hill, won’t that be extra special?
Until then, let the cars go by. Give the surfers the sidewalk. Keep smiling. Be happy. Be strong.
Be bright, San Diego.
Sappy Eugene, signing off.
I love you,
E
SPEAKING OF COMMUNITY:
- WEDNESDAY – I can’t believe we’re still announcing this… Balboa Park, Bea Evanson Fountain. 6:29 AM. Just. Like. Every. Other. Week.
- STARLIGHT THEATER! On Saturday, August 13, we’ll be heading to the Starlight Theatre to help with rehab efforts with other volunteers. RSVP for the event here! Join the NPSD Social Page, and check out the announcements. WE NEED A LOT OF VOLUNTEERS because there’s a huge opportunity for us to be involved with rallying volunteers, managing sign-up, and generally being a bigger part of the efforts. Be there! Give back to the city! And let’s rehabilitate a sick location that we can potentially use as a new workout location! Reach out to any of the leaders, Sam Lee or Jeff Boman for more details!
