Glow Goals (DEN)

Spelling is easy.

DENVER NOTES:

  • Tis the season for traverbalers!  We’ve had friends from DC, SF, Chicago, and Fort Collins get sweaty with us this week!
  • Nowhere in the NP-verse was there a 50 degree temperature swing between workout days.  Nowhere.  This is a fact.  Do not check weather reports from other NP cities.
  • Glow sticks are available in stores year-round.  When Matthew, Morgan, and I decided we wanted to test this workout idea, I was legitimately concerned glow sticks only sold year-round in Amsterdam or some trance-y German city next to the Ecstasy aisle.
  • Running Ruby Hill never gets easier.  It’s even harder when you only have hopefully-non-toxic glow sticks hanging from your neck to light your way.  Thank God for sunrises and playground obstacle courses where Hans smashed his manly bits.

Well, folks, that’s a wrap.  The goose of 2017 is cooked.  Something like 208 workouts from January to now, signed, sealed, and delivered.  It’s a time to reflect on the year and the progress we’ve made, as individuals and as a tribe.  Around this time last year, Matthew and I met to talk about what we wanted to accomplish as a group.  We rolled around a few ideas and there were really only a couple that made sense.  First, we decided we wanted to continue building the culture of the group, to grow from the inside out, rather than make a push for some arbitrary number at a single workout.  Second, we wanted to get more involved in our Denver and Colorado community, not just from a fitness perspective, but from a humanitarian approach.

Guys, we fucking nailed it.  In 4 years of being with this group, I’ve never seen our tribe more cohesive in racing, playing, traveling, and just spending time together.  I have absolutely zero objective data to support this other than social media, but I urge you not to look into it.  Take a risk and dive into the tribe, give, be patient, and I promise, without a shadow of a doubt, that the tribe will give back more than you thought you deserved.

Speaking of giving back, #NPGIVESBACK was a massive success!  We dove into projects from Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, Denver Rescue Mission, Project Worthmore, sack lunches for the homeless, other local missions, and the list continues.  We’ve always been good about supporting each other, but we owe it to ourselves and to Denver to continue supporting our community.  There’s way too much light in this group, and keeping it to ourselves would just be selfish.  Use this group to step out of your cozy little bubble, you won’t regret it.

Without waxing too much philosophic, sometimes we fall short of our goals.  Sometimes, as co-leaders, Matthew and I have grand visions of what a workout can be, and sometimes it falls flat.  Sometimes we have great ideas for a bounce, and you wonder if we have Tourette’s.  This morning’s workout was a prime example.  I had high hopes for poker hill repeats.  Yet, it didn’t quite hit the magic mix of difficulty and vibe.  Thank you for allowing us this space to be idiots, to fail once, and to fail better the next time.  Allow yourself that same space to try, fail, and fail better.

I thought about compiling a top 10 list of NP5280 moments from 2017, but then I got tired.

HOMEWORK: Post in the FB comments YOUR top NP5280 moment or moments of 2017!

Don’t lose that vibe, don’t fake that funk.
