Wisconsin Notes
RECRUIT EVERYONE. We are trying to get 100 people to the workout for our TWO YEAR anniversary the first Wednesday in July.
MONDAY. Come to the Monday Hill Workouts. You will not regret it.
Arizona Rocks
One of the most important parts of November Project is Community. A community doesn’t just refer to the group of people that come to the actual workouts, but the greater community at large. Being actively involved in your community isn’t just about giving – although that is awesome and something I hope this group continues to explore – It can be an exchange of skills, friendship, and experiences that instill a sense of fellowship that can be just as rewarding for the giver as for the receiver. It doesn’t matter who you are, how old you are, what your background is, or what you believe in; there are contributions that you can make in your community that will make a difference. This year we are going to look to the community at large and how we can reach out to others, explore what cool things our community has to offer and give back.
To get the ball rolling, we have decided to issue a monthly challenge to get you out into the city and explore it. Hopefully, the experiences will help grow your love for the Valley and all of is community members and if we are lucky it will make you feel a deeper connection with our community and inspire you to continue giving back to it.
This month’s challenge is to check our these classic Arizona restaurants that have ben in the Valley for a long time. They are all family owned and operated. These families have been actively giving back to the community and it’s important that we continue to support them so that they can continue to be a vibrant part of our city and it’s story.
Take a picture of yourself eating that the restaurant and post in Instagram with the hashtag #NPlovesAZ
If you don’t have insta you can send it to Trevor and I and we will post it.
Have fun out there! Enjoy. Try and meet the owners and the other locals while there. They all have a story to tell.

Cheese N’ Stuff
5042 N. Central Ave.
Phoenix, AZ 85012
Central Phoenix

http://www.cheesenstuffdeli.com
I have been driving by this little neighborhood eatery on Camelback and Central for years and always wanted to check this place out, but have never ventured in. When doing some research on classic Arizona restaurants this place made it to many of the lists and I was PUMPED. I had no clue that this place was an Arizona staple! How had I missed this? Cheese N’ Stuff has been around since 1949. The owner, Stan Zawatski, has been working the counter here since he was a little kiddo after his Dad moved the family West and bought the place. When his dad bought the place it was just a cheese store, but he took to his deli roots and turned it into the sandwich shop it is today. Turns out they sold their ONE MILLIONTH Sandwich – a Rueben – in 2011.
This place is so close to Practical Art that it wouldn’t be right if you didn’t check it out. Bonus points if you get a picture with Stan himself.

Mrs. White’s Golden Rule
808 E. Jefferson St
Phoenix, AZ 85034
Downtown Phoenix
602-262-9256
Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Café has been in the valley for over 50 years and continues to rock it’s prime downtown Phoenix location where it has served some seriously big names. The owner Elizabeth White opened the store in October 1964 and begun serving up some serious home-cooked soul food to the valley. She put in some seriously long hours to stay open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. White a couple of years back and despite being in her 90s she showed no signs of slowing down and it was not surprising to find out that she continued to be an active part of the business despite having turned over the daily reigns.
And you know Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles? The owner, Larry White, is Mrs. White’s grandson and he got his start right there in her restaurant.

House of Tricks
114 E. 7th Street
Tempe, AZ 85281
(480) 968-1114
House of tricks was one of the first fine-dining restaurants to open in Tempe. Although it hasn’t been open as long as the other places on this month’s list opening in 1987, it has worked its way into Arizona’s heart and has long been a local favorite. Robert and Robin Trick (haha – Get it?) chose a 1920’s cottage in the heart of Tempe in which to open the restaurant and have since acquired the house next door, a historically recognized adobe brick structure built in 1903. It is indeed a fine dining restaurant, but if you aren’t feeling up for a date night then check out their happy hour.

The Sugar Bowl
4005 N Scottsdale Rd
Scottsdale, AZ 85251
(480) 946-0051
If you have every been to “Old Town” Scottsdale then you have seen the long lines outside of the Sugar Bowl waiting for sweet treats just as they have been since 1958. Started by Jack Huntress the Sugar Bowl remains a family business to this day like all of the other restaurants included this month. It has a sort of rustic country charm that stands out even today. Fun fact: The Family Circus comic strip, by the late Bil Keane, who was a Paradise Valle resident and fan of the store featured the Sugar Bowl several times in the funnies.
