NP LOVES AZ

NOVEMBER CHALLENGE

We wouldn’t be celebrating Arizona correctly if we didn’t have a #NPlovesAZ challenge involving Mexican Food. It is an integral part of our culture and a freaking delicious part of it. There are so many fantastic restaurants here that it was hard to narrow things down; however, sticking to some of the classics and award winning restaurants here is the list:

The Classics

Los Olivos Mexican Patio (1953)

  • Los Olivos is owned and operated by the Corral family who first moved to Phoenix from Sonora in 1919. Los Olivos was originally opened as a community center for homesick Mexican families. Legend has it that they eventually opened up a restaurant on the property which has remained an Arizona Staple for authentic Mexican food ever since.
  • 7328 E 2nd St, Scottsdale, AZ 85251

Garcia’s Las Avenidas (1956)

  • Everyone has probably heard of the popular Garcia’s chain, but not everyone knows the history behind it all. Garcia’s started out as taco stand in 1956 owned by Olivia and Julio Garcia. The Garcia’s delicious food was growing a reputation and eventually they grew their restaurant into a successful group of restaurants which they sold in 1981; however, they kept the original restaurant location at 35th Avenue and McDowell where the family still owns and operates it. Check out the original recipes that sparked it all.
  • 2212 N 35th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85009

Tee Pee Mexican Food (1958)

  • Something of a local watering hole, Tee Pee has been a longstanding local favorite. Like many on the list it is also family owned and operated. The vibe is casual, but the food is legit.
  • 4144 E Indian School Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85018

Carolina’s (1968)

  • You can’t ask a local for recommendations for the best Mexican food restaurants in town and not get the recommendation to head to Carolina’s. They might just have the reputation for being the best restaurant in town. Their handmade tortillas and Machaca burritos are legendary.
  • Any location

Macayo’s (1946)

  • Macayo’s uses farm-grown, local ingredients for their award-winning menu. Macayo’s has grown over the years now with 13 locations, but the original iconic location downtown lives on. Only the original location counts for this challenge, but while there stop in and check out the new restaurant called Woody’s Macayo’s just a few blocks down from this original location as an homage to the man, Woody, who started it all.
  • 4001 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ

Noteworthy

Barrio Café

  • Barrio Café is nationally known as one of the best Mexican restaurants in the country. Chef Silvana Salcido Esparza is a four time James Beard Award nominee and has been named of the Top Nine Mexican Chefs. Everyone should get the guacamole if they go.
  • 2814 N. 16th Street, Phoenix, AZ

Frank and Lupe’s

  • Frank and Lupe’s should potentially be on the classics list, but every time I pulled up a list of the best Mexican restaurants this place was one there so it is going to go under the newsworthy category. They have a lively patio and outdoor bar which is perfect for weekend days and happy hours this time of the year.
  • 4121 N. Marshall Way, Scottsdale, AZ

So there you have it. Plenty of options for this month’s challenge! We will take a poll on which was the best restaurant at the end of the month so get out there and try and many as you can.

Peace, love and cacti,

Jackie
