What You Expect When You #JustShowUp  (YYZ)

A couple of weeks ago we featured a post from Kate. Today Valeska, the other side of that dynamic duo, shares her story, and talks about what you should expect when you #justshowup for the first time:

“– #JustShowUp at 6:29 at the Baldwin Steps on Wednesday mornings

My first time at NP I was a little nervous. It had taken me a while to actually go. I followed them on Instagram, but was always a little too intimidated to attend the workout. Thinking back on this it was really kind of silly, but everyone gets a little nervous sometimes and NP gets that, and that brings us to the next point. read more

A Love Letter to NP YYZ

Next in our current series of guest bloggers is Kate McDonnell with a few words on what drives her to just show up, week after week.

“I’ve been coming to November Project Toronto for a year. That’s one year of getting up before the sun, taking a bus, to a train, to another train so I can run up and down stairs with a bunch of sweaty strangers. When I tell this to people, they think I’m insane. We’ve all dealt with that reaction, when trying to explain our feelings for a group of people who love (read: love to hate) burpees, who work out in the rain, the cold and the staggering humidity, willingly. What I can never seem to express, and what I’ll attempt to capture here is how much our tribe, and this whole NP movement means to me and why despite all the excuses we have to stay in bed don’t apply to Wednesday mornings. read more

Then & Now: Monica’s NP YYZ Journey (YYZ)

As many of you will know – it’s probably been pretty hard to miss the news – Monica left Toronto to start her new job in Vancouver this week. Mel, Rich and the tribe in YVR have promised to take care of her for us, but before that happens we want to share Monica’s story with you. It’s a long one, but it is well worth reading. As she put it to us, this is “what happens when Monica has a 5h flight to write a blog post and said blog becomes a mini novel“. read more

That Feeling of WOW (YYZ)

On Wednesday we left the tribe in the safe hands of Natalie whilst we were off gallivanting around the world. We asked Natalie to write a short piece about not just yet experience this week filling out shoes, but her experience with November Project as a whole.

Before you read that, please remember that next week is the final week of the June Challenge. It is also Monica’s final week with us, so show up for one last set of burpees with her! There will soon be movement regarding ECSON too so watch this space. read more

More Than Miles (YYZ)

Firstly, how fucking fun was this morning?

Steph had the most fun at her first ever November Project workout.

Secondly, read the Announcements at the bottom of this post

Thirdly, serious words:

‘More Than Miles’: that’s the name of Lululemon’s current campaign, bringing their Test Trucks across Canada and the USA. And it’s fitting that this was the week that they showed up to November Project. read more

Tis the season… (YYZ)

The warmer weather is here, the sun is shining, and November Project Toronto is the place to be on a Wednesday morning (obviously it’s the place to be any morning, but workouts are Wednesday mornings)

With all of this in mind, and the fact that this shit is good, we want to share it. With as many people as we can. Last August we aimed to get 60 people to a workout for our 1st birthday, and maybe we will do that again. But first, we’re launching a recruiting challenge. The competition will run throughout June: you are challenged to earn points for various actions including, but not limited to, bringing friends/neighbours/family members/Tinder dates/exs/colleagues/random strangers to their first November Project workout. read more

Firsts (YYZ)

Firsts are scary. First day at a new job, first dates, first tattoo, first time you switch from your favourite Shiraz to a new Merlot. The unknown is terrifying.

I think back to the last time I tried something new. Besides switching from my usual flavoured hummus (people know how big of a deal that is), I think it was when my friends encouraged me to run a stupid amount of kms across the desert. I was terrified. I had literally no idea what I was capable of. But some 90k later, I did it. And it didn’t totally suck. How did I get through it? My team. Being accountable to them, being encouraged by them, watching them lead by example, having them push me by biking and running at my side. Nothing is as scary when you have the best support crew/team. Think of the last time you tried something new and how you got through it. Likely because someone else was there to help you, encourage you, make you accountable. Then think of the first time you showed up to NP. Maybe a friend brought you. Maybe you were brave enough to show up on your own. What made you stay? Besides your love of burpees, I am sure it was an impression someone had on you. Hence in NP, the power of the bounce, the hugs. It breaks barriers from the start. Crossing comfort zones together. So the next time a new face comes up those stairs, maybe give them an extra tight squeeze, and extra high five as you lunge down the path. Because they are probably pretty F-ing nervous, I mean Sam’s British accent is terrifying. And you’ll be making your self a brand new teammate. NEWS: – ECSON – Event page coming to you . Event details here. Marathon relay takedown. BBQ. Sun tan. Slip n slide optional. – If you’re in Ottawa for racer weekend, come do a Saturday morning shakeout run with us and November Project Ottawa. And possibly other Ottawa run groups. 10am at Parliament Hill. – Big shout out to everyone who came out Monday when the only details were that people will probably think you are nuts. Y’all badass. – Lastly ….GOOD LUCK TO ALL THOSE RACING THIS WEEKEND!!!! I know we have quite a few firsts out there, but you got a whole tribe supporting you 110% and are already so proud !!! The unknown should now be exciting, it should be liberating! It should be very F-YEAH !!!

Fitness Builds Strength…And Friendships (YYZ)

Facebook kindly let Michelle and I know that we became Facebook friends exactly three years ago today. It seems fitting that this should fall on a November Project morning. We became friends through running, but that friendship has been undeniably strengthened by stair sprints in the snow and burpees in the rain. Since that fateful day in May 2014, we have accumulated 287 mutual friends on Facebook, a tangible reminder of how many people fitness has brought us into contact with, not just within Toronto, but all across the world courtesy of our ever-growing November Project community. Less easy to quantify are the memories that we have created in these past three years, the chances that we have taken and the opportunities that we have been given. read more

Courage is Contagious (YYZ)

This week’s blog is brought to you by Monica. Reading this, Monica’s enthusiasm for all things November Project are clear, and it’s not hard to see why she took home the Positivity Award this morning. “As I rush to NP, I see a friend along the way and we make it to the top of the Casa Loma steps at 06:28 – one minute early. The sun’s already up and it’s a cool, crisp spring morning. The best part? I get to hug, high five, and laugh with so many of my absolute favourite humans – all before most people are awake. The pre bounce catch-up always feels too short. There are too many people to congratulate on their amazing weekend races, BQ’s, and general awesomeness.  I’m always so inspired when new people #justshowup. I was there once, and it took one month of procrastinating before I finally did.  I first showed up on a dark November morning in 2015. I was newer to Toronto so I wasn’t even completely sure where Casa Loma was or how to get there, and I was attempting it half asleep in what felt like the middle of the night.  When I was new, I ran to and from NP workouts alone. I also dreaded the pre-bounce chatter because it likely meant a lot of awkwardly standing around while a group of people who all knew each other reunited and talked about their weeks, fitness goals, and made plans. My friends and family would never describe me as shy and yet, trying to join conversations strangers are having beside you can feel more than a little uncomfortable. Then the bounce would start, everyone would get close together and scream and yell and laugh. We would no longer be a random collection of people standing around in the cold and dark. We were a community that I got to be a part of just by showing up. Once a week there is an open invitation to be accepted for exactly who you are regardless of age, gender, race, sexual orientation, or occupation. Our diversity is one of our many strengths. While embracing you just as you are, this same community will be your biggest fans, cheerleaders and encourage you to reach all of your life and fitness goals. In this morning’s bounce, we celebrated an engagement and a birthday. But NPers are not just there for the good times; they are also by your side through challenges, struggles, grief, and loss. Through rain, wind, heartbreak, sunshine, rainbows, and PRs, NP proves time and time again just how #weatherproof it really is.  As I hold the positivity award in my hand, I see the names of some of the most incredible humans I know. People I would have never met had I not just shown up.  Thank you for accepting me on that cold November day with open arms, for encouraging me to show up the next week, for learning my name, and for inviting me into your world. Thank-you for believing in me then, now and always.  To my NP family – in Toronto and in cities across the globe: thank-you for being brave with your life. You’ve made me more daring with mine. I can’t imagine my life without you.” IMPORTANT SHIT:
  • Don’t sleep in next week – it’s Yearbook Photos time.
  • If you have a blog post that you would like to share, please let us know!

Stadium Legs (YYZ)

IMPORTANT STUFF FIRST!

  • Next week is PR Day. If it is dry, we will be tagging. Whether it is dry or not, there will be a Wednesday evening social: see the social group for details.
  • #NPSUMMIT – if you don’t know what it is all about and want to know, drop us a message. But watch these videos first, because they will help you understand.
  • Also on the topic of Summit, if you’re looking for somewhere to stay get in touch with Erin. She has organised an Airbnb for the Toronto contingent travelling down to Boston.
  • Yearbook photos. Remember these? We’ve been tasked with completing the 2017 Yearbook Photos before Summit, and are reaching out to you all for creative ideas on what we can do for our photos this year. It has to be easy to frame, and quick and easy to replicate for photo after photo. Got an idea? Message us and share it!

THIS WEEK’S WORDS!

I’m not going to lie, this week’s workout was pretty brutal. But then again, so are the steps of Harvard Stadium. If you’re coming to Summit in June (which I would encourage everyone to do), you’ll find out for yourself just what I’m talking about at the popup workout. Hopefully Wednesday’s workout goes some way toward preparing you for the physical side of that Friday morning workout. read more
