Our Own Little Wonderland (LAX)

It is impossible to run that trail off of Mulholland and not be happy you got out of bed. There’s something mysterious and almost conspiratorial about getting out of your car in the dark, huddling around at the bottom of the trail, greeting each other in hushed voices, and making the first climb together as a team before you can really even see who’s there yet. Once we get halfway up the trail and throw down our water bottles we’re in our own little wonderland, free to holler, cheer, jam out to Rihanna, fly up and down those steep hills, and take a breath to gaze out over the city lights. Then we scatter off into the rest of our day with a little glow inside us because we already did something wonderful so does the rest of the day really have any choice except to follow suit? read more

Birthday BOOM! (LAX)

Six years ago on this very day, two extremely tall gentlemen took to the streets of Boston and began working out together at an ungodly hour. They made a promise to each other to do it every day for the month of November. There were some guidelines: they had to work out outside, in the early morning, absolutely no flaking, always on time, and although there were no guarantees of fun, or silliness, or that anything magical would occur…. read more

This Tribe is on Fire (LAX)

The tribe was on fire today, and not just because it was a million degrees outside. The workout after a big race is always fun because spirits are especially high. Everyone is inspired by the amazing things our tribemates just accomplished – among them Lauren Duffy fighting through a nasty cold to a BQ; Tara, Kylie, Maggie, and Kayla all throwing down extremely impressive halves like it was their collective job; Aari absolutely destroying her first half marathon; Maximilian beating his marathon goal time by over 40 minutes; and my dear sweet Luje who crushed her marathon post-surgery because she is the definition of unstoppable. Not to mention Melanie, Jeff, and Rachel who conquered the 5k!!! When you witness these people kick ass and then get to run next to them on the PR Day course, you can’t help but push up that last hill a little harder and fly down that trail a little faster. We are all capable of incredible things, and we proved it when we got out of bed at an ungodly hour, threw on running clothes, and threw our hearts into this tribe. read more

Beach Party (LAX)

You know it’s been a killer morning when by announcements I’m too out of breath to talk and my voice is gone. HOLY BANANAS this morning was a good time!!!!! Some major group bonding occurred because everyone was a little scared running under the pier (you think it was dark at 6:30?!?? Try running under that thing in the pitch blackness of 5:30, unsure whether you’ll make it out to the other side alive). read more

#RaceEverything (LAX)

October is an exciting month for NP-LAX: it’s BEACHTOBER of course, but it’s also a month of racing everything!!!! There are big races happening almost every weekend this month. On October 1st Kevin got to achieve his lifelong dream of seeing just how boring St. Paul is at the Twin Cities Marathon, last weekend Dana and Kim battled through intense humidity in Chicago and they DESTROYED, on the 22nd we are repping HARD at Ventura and again the following weekend at Rock N Roll!!!! There’s lots of talk about races at the workouts. People are planning final long runs with each other and tapering. Ron Pearlman will be racing his 1st marathon on his 60th birthday. Lujan and Michelle are coming back strong after surgery/injuries. Lewis will probably set a world record (if not for fastest half, then for person who looks the most like a jack russell terrier). Min wants to BQ and I think he can do it. It’s an exciting time!!!!!! read more

The BEST – Guest Blog by Min (LAX)

It’s hard to believe Min is about to describe himself as an introvert, but here we are. You know him as the howler monkey who screams “WESTSIDE BEST SIDE!” during announcements and hugs with more enthusiasm than anyone I know. When he’s not at a workout, you notice. When he’s at a workout, you can’t help but grin and he makes you want to push with everything you have. He captures the unique weird spirit of NP-LAX with everything he does and we couldn’t be happier that he’s in our tribe. read more

Crisis Management – Guest Blog by Aari (LAX)

There is a wonderful, hilarious, compassionate, strong AF woman in our tribe named Aari Reich. She is a force of good within our community and no morning would be the same without her. Aari has some words to say. Read them.

For someone who tries to get as involved in everything November Project-related as I do, I have an embarrassingly limited amount of neon clothes. So when Maggie told us to wear neon to the workout today, to celebrate our ability to be the bright spot in increasingly dark times, I was at a loss. But something kind of amazing happened when I reached into my dresser this morning- I pulled out the bold purple pants I wore for our #LoveforLiana workout and the red sweatshirt that made its debut at our workout to honor Michelle Jacobsen and her dad. Something about wearing clothes I used when we  honored our tribemates in times of personal crises felt special. read more

Run Happy (LAX)

It’s 6:24 am and my brain is scattered. I’m half concentrating on making sure 5:30ers take their grassroots gear with them and half of me is trying to remember the names of the newbies who just showed up. I’m humming my bounce to myself and wondering if I should drink more water before running the PR Day course. Plans for the rest of the week are seeping into my thoughts as well. I glance down nervously at my feet and remember I’m running a marathon this weekend. Woooooof. read more

Pier-fect Morning (LAX)

10 things I loved about this morning:

1. The appearance of Chris and Amy Kerns, which is the best surprise any person could ask for.

  1. A. Discovering that Chris cannot keep a beat to save his life, and was stomping and clapping at all the wrong times during the bounce with a look of utmost concentration.

2. The policemen who were watching the bounce gave each other hugs at the end and said “I’m glad you’re here,” to one another.

3. ZACH THE BARISTA FROM STARBUCKS SHOWED UP!!!!!! And when he tried to leave after 5:30 I yelled NO! at him and he looked scared and stayed. read more

Progress (LAX)

I’m going to open today’s blog with a quote because the full moon this morning had me feeling i*n*t*r*o*s*p*e*c*t*i*v*e.

My mom posted this on her Facebook wall recently (feel free to follow my mom @Elissa-Mautner if you like quotes, elephant videos, and reposts of our NP albums): The legendary cellist Pablo Casals was asked why he continued to practice at age 90. “Because I’m making progress,” he replied. Every morning we’re given the opportunity to make progress. We get to hug someone a little harder, cheer a little louder, run up the dirty b*tch a little faster, pound out one more push up than we thought we could, and open our hearts a little more. We get to look up at the Observatory as the moon is setting and the sun is rising and take one more moment to think, “This is the most beautiful place I could be right now.” Even if we don’t feel “in it,” if we’re tired and sore and slow and maybe a little crabby, we made progress by overcoming those mental blocks to put something in even though we didn’t feel like it. Then we scatter and take our endorphins and our smiles and our full hearts out across the city and we’re ready to tuck jump over anything that’s thrown our way. And we’re all going to do this until we’re 90!!!!! #notnotacult New topic – I still cannot stop laughing about this: Jesse explained what the burnout was going to be and Liam goes, “oh GOD” in complete horror. Liam, you’re just the best. I remember when you first started showing up and you could barely keep your eyes open you were so tired. Now I can’t imagine NP without you. Alright folks. Have the best day ever!!!!!! NEWS
