A Little Legalese: The Official Verbal Contract (YEG)

Time for a story… Last Friday evening, I happen to run into my very good friend, Bryce. Now, if you’ve been coming to NP for a few years, you may have met Bryce. He was a regular here a few years ago… somewhere around 2015-2017 if I had to guess. Our conversation bought up a memory of an old document related to NP.

Side note: I don’t actually know Bryce from NP – he was coming to NP long before I ever started. Rather, he and I met in the Greenfield Elementary kindergarten class of 2000-2001. We then went on to spend, elementary, junior high and high school together in the same class. Following this, we both were in engineering together at university. Then, a few years later, by coincidence, we both happened to apply for law school, and spent another three years of school together. This works out to 20 school years in the same class, so to call him an old friend would be a bit of an understatement.

Back to Friday night… I run into Bryce (coincidentally, Rob is also present) and we end up talking about a document from years ago that I completely forgot about. Years ago, long before our law school days, he, along with our university friend Spencer (you may also know Spencer from NP – picture a sparkly hat and warm smile) drafted a contractual agreement to govern November Project “Verbals”.

In case you didn’t know what a Verbal is, it is the act of expressing that you will attend a NP workout (e.g. “I’ll be at Walterdale Hill Tomorrow. Make it a Verbal”). Thanks to Covid and other reasons, Verbals are no longer a practice at NP, but back in the day, a Verbal was a serious commitment to showing up, and breaking a Verbal meant you could be the subject of a little shame and humiliation from your friends (all in fun, of course).

Anyhow, after our chat, Bryce shared with me the contract document he prepared many years ago and it’s absolutely hilarious. I’ve been laughing about it ever since. Bryce is now a lawyer, and drafts stuff like this kind of stuff for a living, but I’d like to think NP gave him his big start.

Even though the Verbal is an antiquated concept, I thought it would be fitting to share the Verbal agreement in the blog. So, here it is! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did! (Note clause 5.2 (d), the death clause, that’s my favourite part.)

This evening, Bryce attended to my place of work to sign a Verbal Agreement to attend a workout once we move to Commonwealth. So sounds like you’ll see him this summer!

Lift each other up,

Eric
