Many of us have similar first day stories. We watched on socials, delayed those early morning alarms, uncertain about this 6am grass roots fitness group. Something about those first few workouts melted away those nerves & drew us into the NP community.
I love sweating, laughing and sharing the sense of accomplishment in the darkness & (sometimes) watching the sunrise with my NP friends & family. I am grateful to the people who helped me feel welcome, tapped my foot for partner workouts & encouraged me especially in those early days.
Today, many of you highlighted the welcoming power of our amazing NP leaders in Edmonton, both current and past. That special moment when someone remembered your name & cheered you on. This came up time & time again. It can be hard to remember names and intimidating to ask but it really helps make our community better. I’ve been coming regularly since 2019 and am still getting to know new & old faces. When learning a new name, I am always grateful when people wear similar outer wear! Shout out to Christa who was one of the first regulars I met at NP. I don’t mind when people ask me my name multiple times and hopefully you don’t either! There is lots of power in learning a name, so in the interest of making our community better let’s continue to introduce ourselves and cheer people on by name.
Celebrating each other with “good jobs,” high fives and hugs keep us coming back for more. Celebrating birthdays (oops, we forgot to do that today!). Shared suffering during burpee workouts and burnouts make us stronger. Our welcome clap, morning cheer, common goals (like earning that -30 badge), raceday refuel, cheer stations, volunteer opportunities and more have helped me get to know friends at NP.
It’s hard to believe it took me a while to convince my dad to join NP! Clearly it was love at first workout for him. Sharing NP with my friends & family has helped me feel closer to the community.
As we welcome new & old faces, I’m curious what helped you feel welcome, especially at first? Why do you keep showing up?Whether we come every week, or whether it’s been a while, I hope you feel that the NP community is there for you as it has been for me.
Let’s grow the community together,
The babysitters: Emily, Christa & Balkar
