NP OMies

****FOLKS!! NEW EXCITING THING HAPPENING STARTING THIS MONTH! READ ON TO LEARN ABOUT IT FROM RESIDENT YOGI, SHAWN BROWN! ****

Shawn teaching a pre-Baltimore Running Festival yoga session during our Friday workout!

Peas and carrots, PB and Jelly, Old Bay and Crabs. There are a lot of great combinations out there but I think one of the best duos is the fantastic  combination of running and yoga! As a college lacrosse player and now an avid runner I’ve had a lot of fun beating up my feet, knees and hips. But then it started to hurt too much and I was feeling stiff. I was also mentally not handling injury well and got down on myself when I wasn’t hitting my goals. CUE: Yoga!  When I started going to yoga in 2011, I found that my knees hurt less. My times improved. And overall I felt more calm on my runs, less frazzled. It was this feeling that made me want to take a yoga teacher training in 2015 so I could share these benefits with other athletes in an effort to make them stronger in body, mind and spirit. It’s a big part of what I teach in my classes at Movement Lab and Earth Treks. I love cultivating the connection to myself but also to the community.

And that’s exactly what the NP OMies is all about. In our sessions (which will be lead by several yoga teachers at NP) we’re not aiming not to kick your ass (we’ll leave that to Harkins, Bryson and Kaye during the morning workouts) but rather to increase flexibility, help injury prevention and (perhaps most importantly) give you the space to connect to yourself. To tune into what your body is telling you. To listen to that inner guru. And if you’re thinking, “Listen yoga lady, I’m just trying to stretch my hammies” that’s cool, we got ya. If you’re new to yoga, you go to class every day or just want to enjoy that post-savasana brew with friends, NP OMies is the place for you. No, you won’t become enlightened because you can touch your toes or nail crow pose. But the asanas (yoga poses) are just one part of the practice. Breathing, mental clarity and mindfulness…these are keys to a well round yoga practice and we can’t wait to share them with you.

We’re kicking off the 1st class in this series on Wednesday, May 29th at 5:00 pm at Monument City Brewing. Bring a mat, bring a friend but leave your expectations at the door.

Big hugs,

Shawn Brown

We (Kaye, Lizzie and I) are thrilled to announce the beginning of NP OMies as a super awesome tangent of November Project Baltimore. As most of us probably have learned, running can come with some injuries and also runners tend to keep running until they absolutely can not due to pain/doctors orders etc. Our bodies do SO much work for us, let’s be nice to them! Especially after they crush stairs, burpees and any number of races and miles. We are really excited to have our first session May 29th at 5PM at Monument Brewing. Afterwards, we will collide our NP PR Day Happy hour with NP OMies in a first time special at Monument!! We realize 5PM is pretty tight for people especially after our workout on a Wednesday but we hope that with advanced notice people can make it work! In the future, we will shoot for a little later to accommodate more working folks but since we are borrowing space we will be thankful for what they are offering!!

RAPID FIRE OTHER NEWS:

  • RUN IT FORWARD – Brooks, November Project’s new sponsor, has teamed up with Strava to give back to High School runners in need: For every 10,000 collective miles we run in this challenge (up to 2 million miles!), Brooks will donate gear to a high school runner in need.  Learn more:

  • There is an epic run squad of humans that runs from the Upper Fells region to Rash Field EVERY wednesday for the 5:30 crew. They had EIGHT humans running with them to the workout and back again. We set a goal this morning for 15 during the summer. Want to join? Reach out to one of us or Chantelle Allen and Gail Betz, who I just nominated as the crew captains!! We can do it! #runeverywhere
  • This morning we had a fun progessive handshake making workout! Way to get into it and make new friends!
  • Jen Pace and Bill Logan won the most applauded handshake at 6:30AM with a stunning performance luckily captured heavily in this weeks photos.
  • Louis and Micah won at 5:30 which I did not capture as brilliantly but was equally crowd pleasing!
  • We celebrated birthdays and quite literal birth days with the presence of Cri’s brand new human, Uma! We are so happy to celebrate you! Congrats!
