Say I kept a diary. Yesterday’s entry may have gone a little something like this (and yes, I’m ok with everyone reading my redacted diary):
Dear diary,
Hey. It’s been a while. Sorry I’ve been so busy lately.
(REDACTED: Interlude about what I’ve been up to)
LET ME TELL YOU about this morning. WOAH. HOLY ICICLES. Was it cold this morning? I couldn’t tell after about ten minutes cuz my face was numb. It’s like that song but it goes ‘I can’t feel my face with the wind chill is 9ºF (that’s like -13ºC for our international listeners)’. For realz though, the cold wasn’t THAT bad. Why? I’m glad you asked. I did some pretty solid layering. I wore some good socks. I had extra layers to put on once I stopped moving. And even some hand-warmers (they’re reusable and eco-friendly … thought you’d be proud). But MOST OF ALL, I kept moving the entire workout. No slacking.
Stairs. Stairs. Stairs. Stairs. Stairs. Stairs. Stairs. Stairs.
Spice. Spice. Spice. Spice.
REPEAT.

And I made it home in one piece without frostbite. Only one of my thumbs went numb on the bike ride home! The greatest part about the workout and workouts like this? These are the ones you remember. Remember when it was POURING rain at the Library on Congress Friday workout? Remember the post-apocalyptic blizzard Monday workout (where Hirsh broke his ankle and didn’t even know it)? Remember the Polar vortex workouts where we thought we were gonna freeze to death? Like that one where it was 2ºF at Pershing Park and there was 6 inches of fresh powder and we did relay suicides and people were slipping and sliding and I came home with a frozen beard? And people actually showed up to these workouts! I mean, showing up in 75º and sunny is EASY (cough cough San Diego). Showing up when the weather tells you no? BAD. ASS.
Well, it was great catching up. See you again in another 12 years!
Your writer, Steve
