Remember your first workout?
Do you remember where it was, and who was there? Did you show up alone or bring someone with you? Did someone awesome recruit you to #JustShowUp?
Reflecting back on the “old days” –regardless of how long ago they were– is fun to do now and then. It often helps us realize how much fitter and faster we’ve gotten, because we can so vividly remember doing something that almost made us die/vomit/want to die and now we’re like, “oh yeah, I do that every week.”
So today was the start of #RetroDeck, which we’ll be hosting from time to time on Monday mornings. Instead of brand new locations around the city and brand new workouts, we’ll be throwing back to some of the best old workouts from the good old days. Some might even be back from the BG and Bojan days of OG NP…and others will be from the last three years. But know this, if you ever just fucking loved a particular Monday Destination Deck and you dream about getting up in the dark and/or cold to do that workout again, now there’s an opportunity.
Today we went to Parker Hill, where the deck was held the Monday right after the Runner’s World cover story of Nov 2013 was published. It was the first day for a lot of us (EmSauce included) because the hype was large and the social media spread was like wildfire on a dry plain. And so, 4 years later, we went back to that spot and we did the exact same simple yet grueling workout involving 40 seconds on and 20 seconds rest of pushups, mountain climbers, v-up holds, and jump squats. Way back then, another Newbie named Eric Klawiter went home after that workout and puked. I remember almost throwing up during the warm up sprints across the basketball court–because when BG told us to sprint as fast as we could, I sprinted faster than I ever had. And I only saw badass people around me, so I needed to keep up. Fortunately, Eric managed to still recruit his wife to NP after a few weeks, and the two (along with their three daughters) have been regular hard core members ever since.
#TBT and #FBF have nothing on #RetroDeck Mondays. Don’t forget to nominate your favorite deck location & workout from all the Mondays of NP. We want to know those hidden gems you want to revisit. Let’s revisit, remember, and re-claim Boston all over again. (post those location nominations in the comments on the blog or in the FB album)
