Something Old, Something New

We are in the thick of wedding season. Between J and I, it’s been weddings and bachelor parties almost every weekend. All the wedding stuff got me thinking about the saying “Something Old, Something New,….”, and how important it is to reflect on the old so we can appreciate the new.

When I talk with people about November Project, and fitness in general, the subject of comparison comes up. Sometimes, people even tell me “I’m not in shape like you- I can’t show up until I’m in shape.” To all these folks, I tell them don’t compare yourself to anyone, this is  about you vs. you.

How does the new you, compare to yesterday you, or a month ago you, or 3 years ago you? Each new day is a chance for us to improve upon our previous day’s hard work. It is a never ending cycle of trying to  reach new heights in our potential. Whether it is a race day, or a recovery day, or anything in between each day is an opportunity to get better.

That said, it is easy to get caught up with the never stop improving mentality, and not actually appreciate when we accomplish our goals. So I say, celebrate your goals when you accomplish them, be proud of a new PR, you don’t need to be in everyone’s face about it, but certainly don’t just brush it off. It is important to reflect on how far we have come, appreciating what we have accomplished helps us set our next goal. Without celebrating the victories, we are like hamsters on a spinning wheel. Success breeds success, so be happy when you succeed and help it drive you through your next goal.

Wisconsin Notes:
It is you vs. you (not me, or anyone else).
Set achievable goals.
Achieve said goals.
Enjoy your success.
Look back at where you came from.
Use your success to set new goals, and work to achieve them.
Repeat.
