What gets you out of bed?

What gets you out of bed?

I really like to snooze my alarm. I’d like to think I’m a morning person and can be happy in the morning, but I’ll set my alarm earlier in the morning, just so I can lie in a bed for just a little while my eyes open just a little wider.. I don’t want to fall walking to the bathroom to brush my teeth right? Sometimes it’s to the point where I feel I really have to pee, but am really cozy in bed. You know that feeling?

I really like making poached eggs with toast and tea with milk. On a fancy day, there will be avocado and tomatoes. But the toast doesn’t go in the toaster until I’m done the eggs and the tea is poured. This is important because toast goes well with tea, but it needs a couple minutes to cool down. If you don’t leave it long enough, the tea can be too hot and burn you- and that shit hurts for days.

Sometimes I play music, sometimes I don’t and I think about what I have to do that day. I like my morning routine, but I like to think I’m flexible. It’s okay to make my lunch while the eggs are cooking, but it’s also okay to make lunch after too. Adaptability is a key to life I think. I’m pretty sure this proves that point. We learned a little more about NP Ottawa’s mornings and other interesting facts that. A surprising number of people who don’t brush their teeth before workout and sleep in their workout clothes. And shall remain nameless.

More importantly however, I think about the people I’m going to see at our weekly workouts with our community. What gets me out of bed is the excitement I feel about seeing those smiling faces, when most of the city is still asleep. I like waiting by the centennial flame and seeing who is going to show up. I like watching the faces of the members jump a little and clap because someone new showed up, or someone says they were almost not going to come, but they do. You start to recognize their gait from far away, or you recognize their car, or bicycle silhouette and are excited for them to join the huddle. What amazes me, is that these wonderful people continue to show up, with almost no idea about what the workout is going to be. They can expect high fives, morning hugs, a bounce, they can expect they’ll sweat, they’ll work hard, but with no idea what kind of things they’ll be asked to do. And what is also amazing is that those new people saw a social media post, or heard from a friend, but again, having no idea what to expect, still show up to find out. That is impressive and THAT is what gets me out of bed. YOU get me out of bed. And because you got out of bed, we hope you connected with someone you wouldn’t have otherwise, that you experience something a little more than a workout, that your day is just a little better because you started it with a smile and we hope you know you might have changed someone’s day just because you looked them in the eyes and said “I’m glad you’re here.”

The fact that all of you showed up and chose to share you time and energy and morning with us. Those feelings just writing this make me smile. That’s what gets me out of bed. How about you?

Here’s to bringing soles together.
