Just Another Friday at NP – and #WOahMAN 2.0

This morning was:

  • May 5, 2017
  • Cinco de Mayo, 2017
  • A good day to #JustShowUp
  • Grey and overcast, with just a little rain starting to fall by 7:15am
  • Another day we miss Shira Klane and her speedy AF self during our NP_BOS workouts
  • #WOahMAN 2.0

We also held the regularly scheduled Friday morning #freefitness thing called November Project at Summit Ave.  We capped off the week with a bunch of sweaty hugs, a ton of gratitude and love for this wildly supportive community, and full hill repeats that unlocked the #weekendearned hashtag for all who took part. It was a good day.

To recap the running of #WOahMAN 2.0, we ran the second ever NP_BOS triathlon that includes a stadium, hills, and burpees (to represent all three days of NP in Boston).  We met in the street at the top of Summit Ave at 4:30am.  Racers put on NOVEMBER PROJECT bibs with handwritten names on them.  We bounced to some WOAH-version of that old dance-floor classic YMCA (Capozzi did not know the words but we all know how to spell W-O-A-H), we reviewed the course (follow everyone else), and we gave safety reminders (#safetysecond today, instead of third).  Then we took off for Harvard stadium 2.3 miles away.  In addition to a full tour of stairs, racers were welcomed to the stadium by the volunteer water crew (THANK YOU!!) at section 5.  It’s amazing how much you actually believe you can run 5 more sections when you have a tiny cup’s worth of water or Gatorade (or if you’re me, both!) in your body.  Max, Mat, Kelly, Laura, and Dan–you guys are awesome.  After exiting the stadium and running the 2.3 miles back to the top of Summit, we used the lush grass of Jordanna, Grace, Micah, and Adam’s lawn to do 25 burpees before completing a full hill (front and back side*), doing 25 more burpees and completing a final full hill.  Most of us also almost got lost during the journey back from the stadium.  There’s something that happens to your brain after doing a full tour that makes thinking hard.  There’s something that happens to your brain after getting up at 4:30, running a few miles, and then doing a full tour that makes your brain absolute mush (#woahbrain), so without the brilliant guidance from chalk arrows and clever “WOAHMAN” signage on the ground, only about 7 people would have finished and most would be wandering somewhere in Brighton just hoping to see some #GrassrootsGear to follow home. Thanks to the navigation team (who also #turkeyherded and recorded everyone’s times) of Brittany “Britto” “The funny one” Flaherty and Julia W. Howard.

We had two very fast winners: Brian Frake finished first for men: 1:09:50 and Michelle Iovene finished first for women: 1:28:01.  They went home with the World Champion WOahMAN belts this morning.

Here’s what I find amazing:

  • people are crazy enough to do this shit.
  • a LOT of people are crazy enough to do this shit (some people two weeks in a row. #jarodcain)
  • other people are crazy enough to think it’s fun to show up when they aren’t racing to help out.
  • everyone gets excited about tiny sombreros.
  • apparently fast people like to date fast people (Brian & Justine finished 1st and 2nd in their respective categories, and the power-couple Blake & Morgan both finished 3rd)
  • the tribe never, ever ceases to take care of each other**
  • we’re definitely, definitely doing that again.  Count on it.

OK, so now everyone should go take a nap, if you haven’t already.  And log your times in the Tracker.  And show up to MONDAY DESTINATION DECK at Centanni Park in Cambridge.  Exact location right up in here.

What a week you guys…it’s been filled with the lowest of lows and the highest of highs.  And at the end of the week, this tribe is stronger, more connected, fiercer, a lot more sore and still so, so good.

Let’s keep changing the world.

#WeekendEarned

*funny story: Nina is a college student in Boston and left just after completing WOahMAN to go to her own college graduation… today! She and her friends Anna and Heather showed up for the race this morning, even though they’ve never run the hills before, only the stadium!  When they heard the course description at the start they truly believed the “hill” was the front hill only.  When they got back to Summit and started seeing people running down the back hill their minds exploded and they shed small tears of fear for the FULL hills they were about to take on.  #TheMoreYouKnow

**even when the final finisher of #WOahMAN 2.0 crossed the finish line at 8:10am, she was not alone.  The tribe was smaller–but the tribe was there to pace her to the finish and hug her sweaty body afterwards.
