I know I said I wasn’t going to complain about the weather any longer but honestly, it’s April 24 and we were waking up to snowflakes falling from the sky and snow actually accumulating on the ground! Like really…c’mon!!
I told this story today at the workout but for those who didn’t hear me or those who chose their beds over the great outdoors this morning here it is again. Around this time each year, my mom reminds me of what the weather was like 40 years ago – it was so hot the week before you were born that I was outside suntanning! Yeah well, that isn’t going to happen this week. I just hope that this cold weather will do some good controlling the mosquito populations. Anyone know how cold it needs to be to squash those suckers before they get multiplying?
Speaking of 40 years ago, my mom also told me another story. It was so warm that she and my dad went for a bike ride the week before I was born. During that ride she took a fall and scraped up her leg – I can just imagine the look on her doctor’s face as she described what happened. I believe her doctor’s response – what were you thinking going for that bike ride at 9 months pregnant?
And people wonder where I get it from. When my mom was training for her half marathon after having only run for 6 months – she did a 21km run less than a week before the race because she didn’t want to go to the race unless she knew for sure that she could complete it within the time limit. That race, by the way, is one of my most cherished experiences with my mom. My dad and I also had a chance to run the hypothermic half marathon together…pretty cool that I have gotten to do races with each of them.
So today, as we completed 60 seconds of 30 exercises, with snowflakes cooling off our warm faces, I thought of my mom who 40 years ago was sunbathing. I also wondered who feels older right now…me, with only a few days left in my 30s and not feeling a lot older than when I was awaiting my 30th birthday or my parents who will have a 40-year old kid? Haha…probably them!
