Runyon Repeats (LAX)

For more than 6 years I was thrilled to live my #westcoastbestcoast life mosquito free. The only time I would ever come close to the blood suckers was if I was foolish enough to visit home in the summer. Luckily, no one wants to go to Jersey in the summer. I remember teasing my friends back home in Philly and South Jersey. They’d complain about their itchy bites, and I would laugh and bask in the dry California sunshine. Then the rain came. More rain than I had seen since I first moved to San Diego in August 2010. I was happy about the rain. The drought was wreaking havoc along the coast, and water shortages were so real they were pumping water in from other states. After a couple weeks of rain, the trails were even more awe inspiring than before. Sure the sunrise over Griffith Park is beautiful any day of the week, but when it rolls over plush green mountain sides it takes it to a whole new level. Then we went back to the Griffith Observatory, and there were a few mosquitos. I was disappointed, but figured it wasn’t so bad. I mean I can’t ask for perfect weather AND no mosquitos or flies. That brings us to this morning.

A typical Friday morning in which I woke up to greet the most amazing group of people I know. I made my way up to Runyon Canyon where we would run some awesome trail hill repeats. Maggie and Steve were looking to get their sweat on at 530, and so I was attempting some dark photography and manning the middle high-5 zone. Then the massacre happened.

I felt the first one, and then the second. Then I looked down at my neon green compression socks to see a swarm of mosquitos feasting on my sweet life nectar. Piercing through my neon shield and plunging their proboscis into my vascular calves. With the might of Zeus, I swung my hand down in a thundering clap against my leg. SPLAT! SQUISH! DEAD! I brushed the fresh cadavers off of my leg to reveal trails of blood. My blood. I thought that would be the end of it. But, like the 300 Spartans against Xerxes’ Persians, I too faced an unending army. Quickly to the BB I went and summoned some repellent for the 630 crew. As I awaited for reinforcements I continued my battle against Zika, West Nile, and the most dangerous of all, Dinosaur impregnation. Jurassic Park was a documentary.

Do Good, LA!
