This morning stirred up a bunch of emotions for me. And not like, weepy emotions, just the good kind where you start to think about where we all came from, why I think people in neon are cool, why burpees never start to feel good and how come black spray paint seems to be more permanent than white. We may never get answers to these questions so it’s best we leave them alone
But as I looked around at a mob of happy people running up and down a hill, some of them from the far off land of Boston ( where “Dunkies” is an acceptable way of referring to a chain of mediocre coffee shops) I couldn’t help but think : ” You people are way cooler than everyone sleeping right now.”

I don’t like to cast stereotypes or sweeping generalizations. There are hardworking night shifters, nurses, policemen, firemen, etc. who totally deserve to be in bed at 6:30 am because likely they just stopped working ( although I will point those people in the direction of our nurses who simply see NP as the end of the night shift). But your average individual is not that person, they are simply the ones we call “sleepers.” Sleepers are the ones who think being at work at 9 am is a “struggle” (most of us have run miles and eaten second breakfast by that point) and spend far too much of their time saying they “can’t even.” Sleepers put headphones in and caress the elliptical for an hour after work while catching up on episodes of Homeland. Sleepers might own American Flag or sparkle tights but only wear them to “theme parties”, not to crush stairs and hills early in the AM.
WE love sleepers. Many of us are friends with sleepers, we work with them, we date them…gulp…some of us are even married to them. Luckily there is a cure and it’s very simple. What you have to do is stage an intervention. Get the family together, sit the sleeper down ( but try to keep him or her awake) and tell them it’s time to start waking up. You’re afraid they’re going to turn into the type of person that thinks doing bicep curls in front of the mirror is acceptable and spandex is merely an ironic accessory. (Note: Bicep curls are never cool in front of a mirror and spandex is life). It is possible to grow out of being a sleeper but it takes some dedication and a whole community of happy people waiting for you at the bottom of the proverbial mountain. Sleepiness can be cured. We’re in this fight together.
To everyone who woke up this morning and ran with us, you’re our type of person. We dig you and everything you’re about. We hope you took today’s tiny dose of positivity and turned it into something awesome, something that makes Friday even more kickass than usual. There are literally millions of people afflicted with sleepiness and it is our job to show them the light. In the meantime, when the days get short and the hours get dark, when work seems tedious and your eyes are tired from looking at your computer all day…remember that you’re not a sleeper, you’re a goddam do-er. You take our photos and add rhinos to them. You spread joy. You wake up and get it done. Be proud of the fact that you’re bigger than the mold, happier than the masses and a whole hell of a lot cooler than your roommate whose excuse this morning was ” ugh, I have a really hard day at work today.” Yeah, so do we. To all you do-ers out there, you’re our type of person.
Per usual: Keep taking big bites out of life
Nick
